Country Director Uganda (100 %)

Caritas Switzerland is one of the leading Swiss NGOs in the field of poverty reduction in Switzerland and abroad. Our International Cooperation focuses on humanitarian aid, income generation, climate change and migration. The Country Programme in Uganda 2021 – 2025 will strengthen and amplify this engagement in partnership with other local, regional, and international organizations. The Country Director Uganda is based in Kampala with frequent travels to Gulu and the field. Together with a team of six to ten local staff, s/he will deliver Caritas Switzerland’s strategy within the country and ensure excellent work standards, sound stewardship of resources, and value for its stakeholders.

Your duties

  • Lead and management of the Country Organization and County Programme of Caritas Switzerland in close collaboration with the desk in Lucerne, including HR, finance, administration, and compliance
  • Representation of Caritas Switzerland in Uganda at national level, in technical working groups and other consultative bodies, maintain existing and develop new networks with national and international agencies, organizations, and donors
  • Supervision and coordination of project teams and local partner organizations in planning, managing and monitoring projects
  • Close collaboration with the Caritas Switzerland office in South Sudan for regional project implementation
  • Further development of organizational capacities
  • Acquisition and fundraising at national and international levels; elaboration of proposals, reporting and communication, working with donors to secure and/or manage large-scale and/or competitive funding
  • Support country teams to improve data collection, management, and build a culture of adaptive management, high-quality program performance, and learning
  • Organization and implementation of project visits in Uganda for representatives of Caritas Switzerland, donors, and media representatives
  • Organization of internal assessments and external project evaluations
  • Staff development and partner capacity building
  • Assert working principles of Caritas Switzerland, such as rights-based approach, gender equality, conflict sensitivity, climate change and disaster risk sensitivity and ensure compliance with guidelines and standards

Our requirements

  • Master’s degree in International Affairs, Development Studies, Economy, Environmental Science, or related fields
  • At least 7 years of work experience in the area of international cooperation, including foreign assignments of at least 4 years, and 5 years of senior-level leadership
  • Experienced people manager with strong leadership skills including demonstrable success in managing (large, complex, transitional) programmes
  • Strong analytical and research skills as well as excellent planning and organizational skills, able to work in a dynamic environment, to meet deadlines and manage multiple demands
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and proven ability to work effectively within a partner- and network structure and with different project teams in multiple offices
  • Experience in writing convincing technical proposals and reports on behalf of institutional donors
  • Proven skills in financial and grants management; prior experience with large scale donors
  • Experience in further organizational development as well strategic and entrepreneurial thinking and acting
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
  • Resilience, high flexibility, and willingness to travel frequently within the country
  • Prior experience in the region (Eastern Africa/ Horn of Africa)

Your place of work will be Kampala with frequent travel to Gulu and the field.

Starting date: 01.08.2022 or as agreed upon.
