Background

Badael is a rights-based organization founded in 2013 with a mission to foster transformative justice as the basis of a genuine and sustainable peace in Syria. Badael is a co-founder of SARD and is currently hosting the network. Thus, the potential candidate will sign their contract with Badael and report to Badael’s management and to the SARD steering committee when requested.

About SARD

SARD, in Arabic means to listen, tell, and document, is an oral history network founded in February 2022 by four feminist and oral history organizations: Al-Rowat (Palestine), Badael (Syria), Knowledge Workshop (Lebanon), and Women and Memory Forum (Egypt). SARD’s vision is to use feminist oral histories to intervene in the cultural history of the MENA region, reclaim marginalized voices, and transform power relations to enhance justice and inclusivity.

Objective

The Communication Officer will play a crucial role in enhancing SARD’s visibility, disseminating its work, and fostering engagement with diverse stakeholders. The officer will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communication plan that aligns with SARD’s mission and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Communication Strategy and Planning

– Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy for SARD.

– Ensure that the communication strategy aligns with SARD’s vision, mission, and objectives.

– Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the communication strategy and adjust as necessary.

2. Content Creation and Management

– Create, edit, and manage content for various communication channels, including the website, social media, newsletters, and reports.

– Produce high-quality communication materials such as press releases, blog posts, articles, brochures, and promotional videos.

– Ensure that all content is consistent with SARD’s branding and messaging guidelines.

3. Media Relations

– Build and maintain relationships with local, regional, and international media outlets.

– Draft and disseminate press releases, media advisories, and other media materials.

– Organize and manage press conferences, media briefings, and other media events.

4. Digital and Social Media

– Manage SARD’s social media platforms, including content planning, posting, and engagement.

– Monitor and analyze social media metrics to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and activities.

– Keep up to date with social media trends and best practices to enhance SARD’s online presence.

5. Stakeholder Engagement

– Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including partner organizations, donors, and community groups.

– Coordinate and manage communication with stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate information sharing.

– Organize and support events, workshops, and conferences to promote SARD’s work and engage stakeholders.

6. Internal Communication

– Develop internal newsletters, bulletins, and updates to keep team members informed and engaged.

– Support the documentation and dissemination of best practices and lessons learned.

Qualifications

– Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.

– Minimum of 3 years of experience in a communication role, preferably within the NGO or nonprofit sector.

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Arabic and English.

– Strong editorial and storytelling skills, with an ability to convey complex ideas in a clear and engaging manner.

– Proficiency in using digital communication tools and social media platforms.

– Experience with graphic design and video editing software is an advantage.

– Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

– Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
