Mission and objectives
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Context
UN Women Office is implementing programs in women’s economic empowerment, ending violence against women and strengthening governance through gender responsive research, legal and policy frameworks at the national and provincial levels as well as holds a strong partnership, communication, and advocacy portfolio. The office is currently aiming to scaling up its programmatic and partnership efforts in the country.
The UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) addresses gender equality and women’s empowerment challenges in the Asia-Pacific region, including deeply embedded discriminatory social norms and practices that perpetuate inequalities based on gender and other intersectional identities (e.g. ethnicity, class, region, age, disability, migratory status, and sexual orientation and gender identity, among others). The Regional Office works across the following areas: Governance and Inter-governmental support (including on Gender Statistics); Women’s Economic Empowerment (including Migration, Ending Violence Against Women; Women, Peace and Security; Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Action. Covering 42 countries within Asia and the Pacific, it exercises its triple mandate and functions i.e. Normative, Coordination and high-quality programming at a regional level and in support of UN Women’s offices and UN Country Teams in 24 countries across the region. The UN Women Asia Pacific Regional Office also oversees and manages programming in program presences.
Reporting to the Head of Partnerships and Resource Mobilization, the National Specialist UN Volunteer on Communications and Knowledge will provide support to social media and Website management, Media outreach, develop communication materials and knowledge management.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Programme and Partnership Specialist and the Head of External Relations, the National Specialist UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
1. Social Media and Website Management:
• Plan, manage and execute social media campaigns on different programme areas
• Support in planning tweet chats, and tweet ups during important advocacy periods
• Monitor data, trends and activity relating to social media accounts
• Help draft/update new articles, publications and photos on relevant websites
• Support the creation of digital content like videos and photo essays for website and Flickr
2. Communication Material & Knowledge Management:
• Edit and proof-read communication products such as articles, e-newsletters, brochures, annual reports, postcards, calendars, website and social media
• Oversee design and production of key corporate materials targeted at donors, media and partners
• Support planning and implementation of UN Women’s Knowledge Management strategy, including dissemination and e-documentation of knowledge products
• Track and disseminate communications materials as and when required.
• Assist in the development and implementation of advocacy campaigns on women’s digital empowerment.
• Identify, track, and monitor, key partners and industry trends on LinkedIn.
• Update corporate materials and UN Women’s information kit
• Update media databases on a regular basis
3. Operational Support:
• Support in the procurement of communication services and materials and management of vendors
• Undertake logistics related to events and press conferences
• Updating contact lists and mailing lists
• Undertake other administrative tasks as required
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance
in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever
technically possible.
Results/Expected Outputs:
• An impact on the reputation and standing of UN Women in the region of Asia and the Pa-cific.
• Improved digital outreach and sharing, high quality information material and well-organized pubic events.
• Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment
• A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development dur-ing the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities
participated in, and capacities developed.
• The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with national and international staff and counterparts.
Requirements
Required experience
3 years of experience in marketing/ communications / public relations / publishing / editing.
• Experience in web-based management systems such as PHP, html and content management systems.
• Excellent writing and editing skills, including writing for digital media.
• Well-versed in photography and good knowledge of photo management.
• Experience in product development or marketing strategy is an advantage.
• Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) as well as other specialized software (Adobe Editor, photo and video
editing software, Flickr, Word Press).
• Experience or familiarity with UN System is an asset.
• Experience in the use of social media for advocacy is desired.
• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
• Previous experience in running creative social media campaigns would be highly regarded.
• Previous engagement in Gender issue is an asset
