About the Project – Australia Assists is DFAT’s flagship humanitarian technical assistance program. The managing contractor is responsible for deploying technical expertise to areas affected or prone to be affected by disasters, conflicts and humanitarian emergencies. The creation and maintenance of a humanitarian roster, alongside training and capacity strengthening of partner governments are key activities within the program.

About the Role – The Communications and Public Diplomacy Manager is a member of the executive management team. They are responsible for the quality and frequency of Australia Assists’ external communications with a range of stakeholders and audiences (DFAT, the wider humanitarian community, host governments, UN agencies and partners) via a range of formats including print, video, online and, to an exten t, in real time via social media. They are responsible for ensuring relevant audiences identified by Australia Assists and DFAT have access to regular, informative and diverse communications materials in various formats on what Australia Assists does.

Key Responsibilities

· Under the guidance of the Team Leader, develop a communications, marketing and public diplomacy strategy and plan working closely with DFAT
· Ensure that all communications material including press releases, country narratives, technical notes and case studies are effective, of high quality, contain accurate information, meet accessibility standards and meet DFAT guidelines and procedure· Provide technical communications leadership and quality assurance to Communications Specialists, including best practices in communications, engagement, influencing and messaging to specific target audiences, especially in the public sector. Where needed, edit these materials and tailor them to audiences needs
· Proactively communicate lessons learned and Australia Assists experiences in a simple and tailored fashion to all relevant DFAT stakeholders both in Canberra and at Posts, including those branches that do not directly oversee the program
· Manage and monitor the flow of communications emanating from each country and ensure relevant information is then captured, packaged and fed into facility-wide communications products
· Maintain an attractive, fresh, interesting and responsive website and social media presence
· Support the development of key program-wide reporting deliverables and communication pieces; format and edit these to ensure the hig hest level of professional presentation
· Organise and/or represent Australia Assists at (international) events to increase the facility’s public profile and contribute to international learning; support international representation of staff; maintain a calendar of potential events suitable for DFAT’s humanitarian diplomacy purposes and/or international learning
· Promote raising of the profile of the program and demonstrate its contributions through conferences and other public and professional forums, as well as developing and disseminating communications materials about the program to DFAT, partners and host organisations
· Procure and manage communications consultants and service providers where required (e.g. copy editors, photographers, software suppliers, or web developers), with capabilities in tailoring communication information for different contexts and audiences.
· Management of the design, production and management of a visibility enhancement plan for the program.
· Ensure that all deployment methods and modalities are appropriately branded and visible as per the communications and public diplomacy strategy

About You

· A degree in the field of international relations/development, social sciences, English, journalism, communications, or a related area (or equivalent professional experience in that field)
· Significant career experience in communications, marketing and editing in an international environment
· Experience managing teams, contractors and service providers in different countries
· Experience with designing diverse effective communications formats for print and digital use, preferably with some experience in humanitarian assistance projects
· Excellent writing, design and creative skills, including photography, video and social media project direction
· Proven ability to work with oft en complex content and translate into simple, clear formats
· Experience managing and organising public events
· Demonstrated personal initiative, creativity, and drive
· Fluent English speaker with excellent writing and editing skills
· Experience working on DFAT-funded programs and demonstrated understanding of reporting, public diplomacy and representation requirements
