TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA CONSULTANT

Position: Communication and Social Media Consultant

Reporting to: President, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director

Overall Responsibility: To execute monthly social media content to build brand awareness and organizational reach.

Background

Light Up Hope is an international NGO and US registered 501c3 charitable organization. Our mission is to provide education and health interventions which “light a path out of poverty” and bring hope for a brighter future for impoverished students and communities in Kenya.

We believe that simply being born into poverty should not dictate the end of an individual’s story. Central to our mission is ensuring that women, children and young adults from impoverished communities in Kenya can embrace hope for their futures. We place a special emphasis on empowering women and girls to strive for gender equality and boost economic growth, that allows for individuals to break out of the poverty cycle in the communities where we work*.*

Light Up Hope is located along David Osieli Road, off Waiyaki way in Westlands, Nairobi.

To ensure the spread of benefits across the various academic levels, Light Up Hope implements its activities in three programs;

  1. School Feeding Program. Through this program, the organization provides food to the primary schools.
  2. Students’ Sponsorship Program. The program offers education scholarships to secondary and primary school students through their primary and secondary education.
  3. WOVEN program. Through this program, LUH offers university scholarships to the top performers and vulnerable among the High School program beneficiaries.

General Information

The ideal candidate will be responsible for crafting engaging content, managing social media platforms, and implementing communication strategies to enhance our organization’s brand awareness and online presence. The main responsibility will be developing and implementing communication and social media policy and plan, development of communication and social media content, enhancing communication with the public, assisting the program team to prepare the required content for communication, social media and advocacy campaigns, following up and updating of LUH website blog, and preparing and designing high quality materials for the use in campaigns and promoting the LUH’s activities, projects and programs. Photographic, videographic and graphic design skills are a must.

Scope of Work

  • Develop and execute LUH’s communication and social media policy and strategy which must be compatible with the organization’s mission, vision and goals to increase brand visibility and engagement across various platforms (e.g., Facebook, X(Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Prepare the required content for communication, social media and the LUH’s website. Specifically, the content will be related to awareness raising on the impact LUH is making, internal and external communication and advocacy campaigns.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in social media and communication to recommend innovative approaches.
  • Create compelling content including posts, graphics, videos, and other multimedia assets to communicate key messages and promote programs, events, campaigns, and initiatives.
  • Take lead in writing and editing content for press releases, newsletters, website updates, and other communication materials as needed.
  • Follow up and update LUH’s website blog content and social media platforms on an ongoing basis based on the projects and activities implemented.
  • Provide reports on website visits and monitor and control Search Engine Optimization.
  • Submit reports on the movement of visits and follow-ups by the public on LUH social media platforms.
  • Report comments and questions that come from the public on social media platforms.
  • Collaborate with external partners, influencers, and stakeholders to amplify our brand messaging and reach new audiences.
  • Provide technical support to LUH’s staff and facilitate the process of organizing meetings and conversations organized via the Internet with partners and target groups.
  • Deliver training to LUH’s staff on appropriate content (photos and videos) capture and use of social media in a way that benefits LUH as a brand.

Qualification

The Individual or firm seeking to apply should be registered with KRA and in good standing. They must demonstrate a minimum of 3 years experience in communications and social media management.

  • Proven experience in managing social media platforms and implementing social media strategies for brands or organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and ability to adapt tone and style for different audiences and platforms.
  • Strong creativity and design skills, with proficiency in graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) and video editing software.
  • Proficiency in using social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social) and analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Facebook Insights).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of SEO principles and experience in optimizing content for search engines is a plus.
  • Passion for staying abreast of digital and social media trends and technologies.
  • Experience working with NGOs will be an added advantage.

  • Tax compliance certificate
  • Police clearance
  • A CV or Firm Profile containing a list of at least three clients they have offered similar services to.

Consultancy Fees

The consultancy fees will be as per the contract and shall remain as so until such a contract will be reviewed. The terms of the contract are 6 months with opportunity to renew at the end of contract subject to availability of funds and performance.
