Communications Officer – Fixed-term contract (Maternity cover November 2021 – March 2022)

Project and role overview

The HSOT (Humanitarian and Stabilisation Operations Team) works with the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office), the HRG (Humanitarian Response Group) to lead the UK Government’s response to humanitarian disasters and works with the FCDO Conflict Centre to provide a range of assistance to reduce the impact of armed conflict and meet UK National Security Council objectives.

The HSOT Communications Officer will play a key role in raising awareness and build understanding, internally and externally, of the breadth and quality of HSOT work as it supports FCDO’s objectives for humanitarian and stabilisation action.

Primary responsibilities

The HSOT Communications Officer will be responsible for ensuring that the overarching communications strategy remains relevant and responsive to changing priorities and needs.

Internal communications:

o Enable efficient and effective communication flows within the HSOT core standing team, through various internal channels

o Advise HSOT colleagues on branding and messaging, promoting coherence with the agreed branding strategy

o Support the HSOT teams by creating resources such as infographics, informational posters, and introductory materials

o Generate content and issue the HSOT newsletter

o Support HRG and the Conflict Centre to communicate HSOT work, offer and impact within the government departments and across FCDO

o Develop content ranging from good news stories, capability briefs and articles on operational improvements

o Maintain templates and updated core products such as introduction to HSOT ppt, relationship map, capabilities briefs, quote bank, and photo archive.

o Work closely with HR on employee engagement initiatives

o Contribute to increased awareness of HSOT across other Palladium teams.

External communications:

o Work with the FCDO communications team to develop external communications pieces

o Manage HSOT image and promote humanitarian response via social media channels, tweets etc.

o Lead the production of the project’s Annual Report

o Forge relationships with the Palladium corporate communications team and support them to develop articles that raise HSOT profile.

o Promote HSOT through relevant channels to help attract talented humanitarian and stabilisation professionals to the team, rosters and partnerships.

Required Qualifications:

· Extensive experience in developing content for a range of stakeholder groups, including but not limited to social media, website, external publications, articles, newsletters, project reports, photos, infographics and presentations

· Experience in humanitarian and/or international development sector essential

· Strong relationship building and coordination skills

· Relevant experience designing and delivering communication and outreach strategies

· Ability to plan, organise and work under own initiative and meet deadlines

· Demonstrate creativity and problem-solving skills

· Experience working with FCDO or institutions desirable
