About MAG:

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the Sri Lanka Programme:

MAG’s Sri Lanka programme addresses the problems faced by mine-affected communities by providing efficient, effective and safe clearance of land. The Sri Lankan civil war ended in 2009, but landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) continue to threaten communities in northern and eastern districts. MAG uses a mixture of manual and mechanical teams to maximise the efficiency of the land release process in country. By making land safe and returning it to the affected communities, MAG is helping people in Sri Lanka to rebuild their lives, livelihoods and futures following the civil war. MAG Sri Lanka extended its programme activities by adding WAM activities to the programme in 2019.

About the role:

The Community Liaison Manager will assist the Senior Management Team in country to ensure that MAG’s approach to community participation in mine action is integrated into the planning and implementation of programme activities. The postholder will also undertake the management, training, assessment and monitoring of Community Liaison (CL) staff and activities in the field and recommend improvements to the Country Director (CD) where appropriate. You will be responsible for the gathering and dissemination of relevant and accurate information to enable informed decision making, maximisation of impact and the achievement of MAG’s vision, mission and key aims.

Roles can often be in remote locations, working in challenging contexts. The life-saving impact the work has on local communities is very real, and rewarding. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in MAG’s life-saving work on a day-to-day basis.

About you:

The successful candidate will have experience of conducting needs or risk assessments in order to design and implement appropriate interventions and experience in the monitoring and evaluation of development projects, including changes in gender norms and social inclusion. You will have demonstrable experience working overseas in community and/or educational development activities and in emergencies. You will also be experienced in the monitoring and evaluation of development projects and in the design and delivery of formal or informal training and transfer of skills to others. The postholder will have experience working independently for extended periods of time in “stand-alone” environments with minimal supervision.

To be successful in this role, you will need strong information and people management skills, relevant numeracy and IT skills and good spoken and written English. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish relationships with local authorities and people from a military, development and community background are required. You will also have sound understanding of rural livelihood and international development issues and excellent organizational skills with the ability to coordinate activities and projects.
