BACKGROUND
Founded in 1979, Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organization that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger.
Our mission is to save the lives of severely malnourished children while helping communities become self-sufficient. Recognized as a world leader in the fight against malnutrition, Action Against Hunger has pursued its vision of a world without hunger for almost four decades, combating hunger in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity. With more than 8,000 staff in nearly 50 countries, our programs in nutrition, food security, livelihoods, water, sanitation, and hygiene reach more than 20 million people each year.
Since 2007, Action Against Hunger Canada has provided leadership on the development and implementation of one of the world’s leading nutrition survey methodologies: SMART (Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transition). The project has built the capacity of over 2,000 health workers around the world on how to apply this methodology when conducting nutrition and mortality surveys.
The University of Toronto is a world-leading research-intensive public university, ranked third globally on scientific paper performance (after Harvard and Johns Hopkins), among the world’s top ten universities for “graduate employability”, and as global a top 30 research institution attracting over $1B in annual research funds. The University brings cutting-edge knowledge and expertise in research, provide technical direction and supervise faculty and trainees from will draw on faculty and trainees from the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Medicine (Canada’s largest) with the Joannah and Brian Lawson Centre for Child Nutrition, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (Canada’s largest, ranked first nationally and 3rd among countries with universal health coverage). The University of Toronto ranks 5th globally for public health generates the largest number (>300) of the top 10% most highly cited publications in the field of Public Health, Environment and Occupational Health among the top 15 Canadian research-intensive universities.
Ultimately, this collaboration between Action Against Hunger and the University of Toronto leverages complementary expertise and capacity to empower communities and individuals to address gender inequality and provide useful knowledge in fighting malnutrition through a gender-transformative approach across interventions and institutionally. The goal of this meta-analysis project is to develop a deeper understanding of the gendered nature of nutrition and nutritional needs within the global humanitarian response landscape. The aim is to determine the differences in undernutrition between sexes and any associations between these differences based on gender within the same contexts.
OBJECTIVE
The team is seeking an expert-level gender equality consultant within the field of global health to provide guidance for this meta-analysis project. The consultant will provide advisory support for the planning, implementation, and interpretation of the qualitative component of this project, supporting several planned project outputs.
SERVICE DESCRIPTION
Specifically, the consultant will aim to:
• Provide technical guidance on the design and implementation qualitative guide for the key informant interviews;
• Provide insight to the dissemination plan’s objectives and planned outputs;
• Provide feedback to the final outputs of the meta-analysis project.
TIMELINE
Duration of 8 weeks starting on Friday, March 10, 2023.
PROFILE
Required
- Master’s Degree/ PhD in nutrition, or public health, or epidemiology;
- Proven experience in the field of nutrition and gender equality;
- Proven experience working collaboratively in academic/ research settings in global health/ gender equality research/ contracted work for humanitarian organizations;
- Strong experience in epidemiology and qualitative research/ mixed methods;
- Experience providing guidance and technical inputs using the Gender Transformative Framework for Nutrition and its domains.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
Required:
- Advanced knowledge of gender and epidemiology;
- Ability to solve intellectual problems of appreciable variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity to manage ambiguity and complexity;
- Ability to work successfully in a team environment and develop relationships with co-workers through effective communication;
- Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees;
- Demonstrated commitment to gender equality;
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point).
DUTY STATION/ LOCATION
The consultant will work home-based and might be required to meet face-to-face with the team based on current project outputs.
SUPERVISORS
The consultant will be supervised by the Associate Director of Nutrition at Action Against Hunger Canada.
