The consultant is expected to deliver the following results:

  • Final transcript of over 35 hours of video recording according to an agreed sequence; – Draft design and structure of a book, which follows an agreed set of sequence and relevance to the expected outcomes of the project.
  • Prepare necessary groundwork for the publication of the book as part of the “I Was There” project, identifying editor(s), drafting ToRs and facilitating the procurement of publishing company.
  • Support HLSS with the production of the podcasts for the “I Was There” project. Support to review, provide comments to and follow up with production company for all 24 podcasts.
  • Draft socialization and comms campaign package for distribution and use of “I Was There” project as well as for the “Leadership in Humanitarian Action” Handbook currently being revised. Support to develop a campaign roadmap.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Humanitarian Leadership Strengthening Section (HLSS) serves as the primary advisor to the ERC, as the chair of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) on the issues of strengthening a system-wide support to field humanitarian leadership. Throughout its different workstreams, HLSS supports field leaders and promotes and champions strong collective leadership to respond to the field leadership requirements. HLSS also promotes leadership that enables humanitarian partners to collectively do more for the people we serve by working together to strengthen humanitarian effectiveness.

Roles and Responsibilities

The consultant will support the Reporting and Communications workstream, specifically on the development of a book to highlight the experience of former humanitarian leaders and will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Edit and finalize transcript of over 35 hours of video recording of former humanitarian leaders.
  • In line with the agreed outputs for the project, support develop design of the book that ensures relevance and a smooth sequencing and structure of each speaker.
  • Support HLSS with other areas of this project, including on the production of podcasts.
  • In terms of leadership development, support to edit the Humanitarian Glossary, linked to the HC Handbook.
  • Editing work for the leadership development workstream, including the generic One-on-One templates for the RCs, but also broader support with research materials, case studies and role plays for the planned RC simulation exercise.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international relations, political science, social science, law or a related field, is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of 5 (five) year of experience in public relations and communications is required. Experience in organizing and managing events is required. Experience in planning and executing marketing and social media plans is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
