The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking candidates for the position of Coordinator in our Toronto office to support the Development and Outreach team in Canada. The Toronto office serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in Canada. The ideal candidate is organized, a self-starter, and interested in fundraising. This is a full-time position, reporting to the Senior Associate Director and works closely with the Toronto City Director. This role requires availability to work occasional nights and weekend events.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may work remotely, but may be required to work from the Toronto office occasionally. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate the production of major fundraising, outreach, public programming and initiatives in Toronto at the direction of the Senior Associate Director;

2. Provide special event support for the Toronto Annual Dinner, Film Festival, receptions, committee meetings, briefings and other events by creating communication materials, handling mailings, tracking RSVP’s, overseeing volunteers, coordinating materials, on-site support, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders;

3. Organize logistical aspects of fundraising by maintaining the database and key spreadsheets, preparing solicitation and acknowledgment materials in a timely manner, coordinating outreach materials, collating follow-up reports and internal logistics, and liaising with internal teams and processes;

4. Assist with prospect and donor relationship management with Canada Committee members by coordinating correspondence, contacting donors, scheduling and preparing for donor meetings, drafting solicitation materials, maintaining various contact lists, and tracking communication;

5. Maintain the Salesforce donor database by updating records and information, overseeing data entry for special events, collating data and fundraising reports as necessary, and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data;

6. Prepare, design, edit and distribute communications, correspondence, and documents, including e-newsletter & event communications in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, web content for the Canada page and daily social media management; and

7. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, fundraising, or equivalent work experience, specifically supporting the administrative work of a team, is required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant work experience and a demonstrated interest in fundraising and events is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office experience or events coordination, effective organizational skills, and meticulous attention to detail are essential for success in this role.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Proficiency in oral and written French is an asset.

3. Experience with event planning, community engagement, and/or philanthropy is required; strong interest in human rights is an asset.

4. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications and Canva is required; experience with Salesforce and Marketing Cloud is desirable.

5. Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences including donors and external partners are required.

6. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.

7. Self-motivation, the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally are required.

8. Excellent analytical skills and the natural curiosity and creativity needed to conduct online research are required.

9. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
