Country Director- Bangladesh At Save the Children

The Opportunity

As a member of the Asia Regional Senior Leadership team, you will have shared accountability for Save the Children’s international development and humanitarian response programming in Bangladesh, with a budget of approximately 40 million, staff over 800 and more than 35 partner organizations

Save the Children globally seeks to bring about immediate and lasting change for children, in particular through achieving the following three breakthroughs for children globally by 2030:

  • No child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday
  • All children learn from a quality inclusive basic education
  • Violence against children is no longer tolerated

To support achievement of these ambitious goals and breakthroughs for children, you will work with your leadership team to deliver on the agreed goal for Save the Children Bangladesh to:

  • Be a leader in Bangladesh’s Child rights’ movement, changing how children are treated, in particular changing social norms around violence, abuse and neglect of children.
  • Demonstrate real practical solutions, and collate evidence and seek policy influence to ensure long terms systemic change through partnerships with different levels of government.
  • ‘Use global knowledge in a Bangladesh context and Bangladesh knowledge in a global context’, leveraging our global network
  • Respond to the negative impacts of inequality and exclusion on children in rapidly changing socio-economic contexts

In order to do the above, you will lead the country office towards further growth and continue to deliver quality programmes, including advocacy and campaigning, for and with children. The country of Bangladesh has entered and exciting new phase in its development. You will work with the Save the Children movement more widely as a member of the regional leadership team, and in partnership with the 30 independent Save the Children members.

Key Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Regional Senior Leadership Team, contribute to :
    Strategic development and delivery of international programming, in both humanitarian and development contexts, in line with the Save the Children mandate, strategy and theory of change
  • Collaboration with colleagues in the region to deliver any regional programmes and advocacy, in line with regional strategies, operational plans, budgets and SC Member requirements that result in significant impact for children
  • Supporting the development of an organisational culture that reflects our dual mandate values, promotes accountability and high performance and frees up our people to deliver outstanding results for children and excellent customer service of our Members and donors.

Deliver transformational change in-country, including:

  • Developing and delivering improved outcomes for children through delivery of the Save the Children global programme strategy and global initiatives and growth targets as set for the country
  • Implementing Save the Children International operating model for the country, in consultation with the Regional Director
  • Engaging Save the Children staff, partners and other stakeholders to create real shared ownership and collaboration
  • Ensuring strong collaborative relations with the Bangladesh Government entities and relevant foreign embassies and donor representatives
  • Creating an environment of continuous learning, where staff are encouraged and supported to grow as talents and develop and are willing to be held accountable for their commitments
  • Ensuring that the focus of the organisation remains on the rights and needs of children

Be accountable for delivering country strategic plan aligned with global strategic directions:

  • Developing strong country strategy and operational plans that identify and address significant issues facing children, and are in line with Save the Children’s overall strategy (with a focus on Global Initiatives) and theory of change
  • Driving stronger and more diversified funding portfolio which allow better balance of unrestricted funding and flexibility to react where children’s needs are greatest.
  • Preparing for and implementing rapid and effective responses to major emergencies affecting children, including building relationships with key humanitarian and development decision-makers and partners in-country
  • Delivering programmes and advocacy in line with the country strategy, operational plans, budgets and Member requirements that result in significant impact for children
  • Growing the country programme to become the leading NGO addressing children’s issues in the country
  • Developing and maintaining efficient and effective operating systems, and ensure compliance with all Save the Children International essential standards and procedures
  • Ensuring country office holds a robust mechanism to attract, retain, develop and engage employees to bring highest impact for children.
  • Maintaining effective safety and security management systems and ensure compliance with all global/regional safety and security operating standards
  • Proactively participate in the identification and mitigation of risks for the organization, its beneficiaries and its staff including reputational, physical and monetary risks with a specific focus on the area of country management

Be accountable, and develop the capacity of, mentor and hold Senior Management Team accountable for:

  • Developing and coaching SMT to optimise their potential in pursuit of Save the Children’s objectives
  • Serving as a role model and lead the way on the new values and ways of working
  • Ensuring appropriate SMT staffing at all levels; ensure appropriate gender and diversity
  • Ensuring the country office implements DEI strategy with key deliverables.
  • Ensuring accountability of appropriate professional development opportunities for SMT with strong successor pipeline for all critical roles.
  • Ensuring that all staff understand and are able to perform their roles in humanitarian responses
  • Encouraging a team culture of collaboration, learning, creativity and innovation

Ensure achievement of the regional and global priorities with emphasis on:

  • Collaborating with colleagues in the region to deliver any regional programmes and advocacy, in line with regional strategies, operational plans, budgets and Save the Children member requirements that result in significant impact for children
  • Building relationships with key decision makers and partners
  • Contributing to global knowledge and learning in Save the Children
  • Rolling out of global brand and digital presence though increased supporters
  • Developing global knowledge, culture, capacity and systems through sharing and using knowledge of what works for children to improve the quality of SCI’s impact.
