Title: Creative Storytelling Consultant (Project Impact)

  1. Background

ActionAid Myanmar is seeking a talented consultant to propose and carry out a creative storytelling project (in the form of written stories, photography or photo essay) that can capture the impact of a community development and livelihood strengthening project in remote areas of Myanmar.

  1. Objectives of the assignment

The Consultant is required to propose a visual and written project that documents the stories of beneficiaries and how they have taken lead in making decision and carried out actions for development of their communities in hard-to-reach areas of Myanmar. The consultant is required to conduct the necessary research, interviews, photography, editing and narration to produce a high-quality and in-depth series of stories, in ready-to-publish format. The consultant is required to operate in a highly professional, ethical manner throughout the project.

  1. Scope & Deliverables

The Consultant will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide knowledge sharing sections and trainings and bring professional perspectives on collecting compelling stories and capturing storytelling images to build storytelling capacity of partner staff and relevant program staff.
  • Propose a visual and written project that documents the inspiring stories of beneficiaries in hard-to-reach areas of Myanmar.
  • Implement this project through creative means, including but not limited to research, phone interviews, photography, written stories, translation and design.
  • Implement content collection, creation and production with close collaboration with field staff by empowering capacity of the staff.
  • Produce a minimum of 7 high-quality ready-to-publish stories. (Depending on the proposed format, the minimum requirements are as follows:
  • Written stories: 500 words or more, and a minimum of 5 images for each story
  • Provide all content in both English and Burmese language versions.
  • Work closely with Partner Organization’s staff with support of Communications and Program teams to develop powerful stories and capture strong photos through ongoing feedback and proactive/ effective communications
  1. Timeline (Expected Timeframe to deliver this work)

One month, January 2023.

  1. Qualifications

As the consultancy is multifaceted, the consultant is expected to have a mix of skills relevant to the assignment. The required background and experience for the consultancy is as follows:

a) Education

Bachelor’s degree in any field, or relevant experience in lieu of.

b) Experience

i. Demonstrable experience in conducting interviews, documentary photography and storytelling.

ii. Experience in providing training, mentoring/coaching trainees on photography and content collection would be an asset.

iii. Working with vulnerable groups and sensitive situations.

iv. Working with women and youths, knowledge of, or willingness to familiarize with, feminist principles and child safeguarding policies

v. Knowledge on conflict sensitivity

c) Language

Fluent in English and Burmese.

d) Others

Ability to figure out alternative approaches during challenging situation. Flexible hours and availability.

  1. Management & Reporting

The Consultant will coordinate Communications team and report to the Youth and Governance Lead at ActionAid Myanmar.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) should include:

  • A motivational letter including an indicative methodology for conducting the study, as well as relevant credentials (should be a maximum of 3 pages).
  • A budget for consultancy fee using daily fees and other relevant expenses related to the task.
  • A CV or CVs if more than one consultant in the team
  • An example of similar work done
