Organizational Context

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering an internship within the World Bank – UNHCR Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement (Joint Data Center) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for the forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR is present in over 135 countries, using its expertise to protect and care for millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced and stateless people.

The Joint Data Center is a collaboration between two multilateral institutions – the World Bank and UNHCR – joining efforts and expertise towards improving the quality and quantity of data for evidence-based policy decisions and responses to global forced displacement crises. The collaboration between the World Bank and the UNHCR builds on their on-going joint initiatives on forced displacement including analytical work, collaboration with governments on microdata collection, and joint missions. The Mission of the Center is to enhance the ability of stakeholders to make timely and evidence-informed decisions that can improve the lives of affected people.

The Joint Data Center leverages partnerships and innovation in its focus on the collection, analysis, dissemination and use of primary microdata that enables policymaking and programming. This includes demographic and socioeconomic data, including on income, skills, education, health, and economic activity. The data is anonymized and encompasses refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people, returnees, asylum seekers and host populations.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will assist the team members in the development of the activities of the JDC Work Program. Duties and responsibilities will include:

· Carrying out data analysis exercises and preparing descriptive analytical summaries;

· Cleaning, anonymizing, and posting socioeconomic microdata;

· Contributing to the design and development of data and evidence gap maps on forced displacement; Working with the web team to develop an online database of publicly available data sets;

· Researching and documenting the existence of data availability in displacement hotspots, reaching out to UNHCR, World Bank or other agency teams and interacting with National Statistical Offices;

· Engaging in literature revision on the issue of forced displacement with specific reference to quantitative studies and data-based analyses, and contributing to drafting topical summaries;

· Contributing to the drafting of non-technical summaries and preparing background material for the dissemination of results originating from the activities of the Joint Data Center; and writing summary reports of findings on a range of topics, tools, and events;

· Collaborating with team members in the preparation and implementation of knowledge sharing activities, with specific reference to the 2nd Joint Data Center Research Conference on Forced Displacement (January 2022);

· Support to preparations of events, internal and external meetings, communication efforts including note taking and production of support documentation.

· Other tasks as needed

Minimum qualifications and professional experience required

Essential:

The ideal candidate will:

· Hold a Bachelor’s degree equivalent or higher in a subject such as Economics, Political Sciences, International Studies, Health Studies or similar, with a proven quantitative focus; or in the field of Statistics or Quantitative Methods;

· Have a demonstrated knowledge on handling, cleaning and preparation of microdata-sets;

· Demonstrate a thorough understanding of econometric and impact evaluation methods;

· Have a good command of statistical packages, such as Stata®, or R;

· Have a demonstrated interest in forced displacement issues and/or experience working in this area;

· Display full command of written and oral English, including strong drafting skills;

· Have excellent research skills;

· Be able to work well independently as well as in an intercultural team; and

· Be available to work full time (40 hours) throughout the duration of the internship.

Desirable skills and experience:

· Knowledge of French or Spanish;

· Knowledge of Geocoding and Spatial Data Analysis Software;

· Previous experience in research activities and drafting of dissemination products (reports, policy briefs, data summaries, etc.); and

· Previous working experience on forced displacement and development issues.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

· Be a recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate school program from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO.

· Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to work of the Organization.

· An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Location and Conditions

The successful candidate will be based with the team in the UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark. The internship is a six-month full-time role with 40 working hours per week, from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. The start date is to be determined in accordance with the measures adopted by the Danish government and guidance of UNHCR regarding the COVID-19 situation. Depending on the circumstances, there is a possibility the successful candidate will perform certain duties remotely and/or from at home.

Obtaining and renewing current visas and residence permits including all associated costs, are the responsibility of the intern. Please note that the terms of internship, as defined by UNHCR practice, include the payment of a Food and Local Transportation Allowance (FLTA). In case the intern is sponsored by another source during the internship this will be deducted from the FLTA.
