Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organisation that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally. Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organisations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.

Summary job description

Blue Ventures is hiring a full-time Data Engineer (at least one year of relevant working experience) to grow our data systems and broader software engineering capabilities. You’ll play a central role in building and maintaining data architectures to enhance fishing communities’ evidence-based decisions.

In this varied and highly rewarding role, you’ll be responsible for designing and monitoring our core ETL processes, scaling our data warehouse, and working closely with our field teams to ensure data is always in the most accessible and reliable form.

The successful candidate is an excellent problem-solver, independent and highly motivated, able to learn quickly, explore and implement new ideas. You have an understanding of how modern data architectures work, how to design, quality-check and monitor data systems at scale.

You are a team player that participates actively in group discussions, and is not afraid to ask lots of questions. You will have strong communication skills and be able to translate technical concepts into simple language. You will be an active listener, able to engage at all levels of the Organisation and across a multicultural team.

This position will sit within the Global Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team. Reporting to the Data System Manager, you’ll be part of a fast-growing data team distributed across our countries of operations.

This role is founded on the ability to learn quickly and keep-up to speed with a fast-changing data environment. Therefore, you’ll be asked to spend a considerable amount of your time exploring, learning and piloting new engineering technologies, a great opportunity for professional development.
