The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the Data Media Manager in Centre – London, UK

Role Purpose:

Save the Children is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic data journalist to join our global media team.

You will be brimming with original ideas for data-driven stories that highlight the challenges and trends facing children globally and also excited about how that data is presented.

You will need to have journalistic and technical skills to be able to pitch, research, report, and build data-driven stories for the world’s largest independent child rights organisation.

The ideal candidate will be able to visualise data driven stories in new and imaginative ways. You will be able to find, clean and analyse data to write stories, and create compelling visualisations as well as write stories. You will be just as comfortable creating fast turn-around on the day analysis as longer term more in-depth data led investigations. You will be happy both working on stories on your own and more collaboratively as part of our team.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Significant experience working with data, including collecting and cleaning data.
  • Understanding of Excel and Google Sheets is essential
  • Ability to visualize complex ideas in a clear, accurate, creative, and intelligent manner and build data visualisations
  • Proficiency at writing detailed and accessible articles presenting data analysis
  • Proven track record of data visualisation on social media platforms
  • Understanding of how raw data can be turned into compelling insight and sharable news content
  • Proven ability to identify, research and develop a story with creative thinking
  • The ability to work as part of a small team across time zones and multitask when needed with strong interpersonal skills
  • An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to prioritise an unpredictable workload, spot good news angles, and solve problems quickly with limited support
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • A commitment to Save the Children’s vision, mission, values and approach and commitment to safeguarding children in accordance with our Child Safeguarding Policy
  • Based in the London area to suit a hybrid office-home work environment

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the NGO sector
  • Experience working in fragile contexts
  • Additional languages are an advantage

We can offer circa £42,000 FTE per annum (If based in UK) with an option of flexible working hours. This is a part-time position, requiring the chosen post holder to work 3 days per week.
