Global Rights Compliance (GRC) is an international NGO focused on atrocity-crime accountability. We have presences in The Hague, London, Washington, DC, and Kyiv.
GRC’s work in Ukraine is in support of the War Crimes Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor General and its regional prosecutors’ offices through several Mobile Justice Teams (MJTs) which assist the OPG/RPOs by providing crime-scene evidence collection, analysis, and advice on investigations and case-building. Our headquarters for this project are in Kyiv. Our MJTs operate throughout Ukraine in areas affected by Russia’s invasion.
We seek a data-visualization expert.
DUTY STATION: The full-time job will be based in Kyiv (Ukraine).
CONTRACT DURATION: 6-month contract with a probable extension.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- prepare visualisations of data collected by investigators to strengthen atrocity-crimes cases being prepared by prosecutors to send to a judge: maps, graphs, animations
- expand the boundaries of how data viz is used in the Ukrainian court system
- develop tools / guidelines to simplify the creation of data viz results so the process can more easily be replicated by others with less technical knowledge
- seek new sources of data on atrocity crimes in Ukraine, the better to make cases more “solid”
- collaborate with investigators/prosecutors to ideate about which documents/data provide useful evidence/input for their case-building work
ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE
Required
- Ukrainian national
- demonstrated track record efficiently creating visually convincing examples of “data storytelling”
- familiarity with higher-level data-viz tools such as Tableau, Mapbox, Chartist, moveVis
- ability/openness/showing initiative to suggest and implement ways of how information can be visualized in order to simplify the analysis of, and search for patterns in, the data
- native-level Ukrainian language
- self-starter, ability to cope with and function effectively in a fluid environment
Desired, but not required
- familiarity/experience with lower-level data-viz-useful tools such as Python, R, Matlab, MySQL, chart.js, Someka
- competency in English
