Who is the Director of Policy and Advocacy?

The Director of Policy and Advocacy is a key member of Cooperation Canada’s leadership team. You care about a better world, and you have the talent, skills, experience and commitment to push for greater Canadian leadership at a time when conflict, the climate crisis, rising authoritarianism, growing inequality and shifting geopolitics means that progress on development and human rights are under threat in many parts of the world. You have a strategic mind and entrepreneurial spirit that can drive Canadian global leadership on international cooperation and humanitarian action through impactful collaborations with civil society, parliament, Global Affairs Canada and thought and practice leaders.

You roll up your sleeves to hustle and do the work. You trust and support your competent team to deliver exciting policy and advocacy-focused initiatives that have the backing of institutional and philanthropic funders. You are a compassionate leader, functionally bilingual and centre equity in your work. You are looking for an opportunity to be challenged, to create and to build.

Ideally, our candidates will have:

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, matched with a post-graduate degree(s) in relevant field(s), or equivalent experience with sound knowledge of international cooperation.
  • Good knowledge of Canadian public policy and political context, with significant experience working in advocacy, parliamentary engagement, with civil society, and with government departments.
  • Strong communicator, experienced in high-level representation.
  • Successful experience raising funds, developing strategic partnerships and managing programs and budgets.
  • Reputation for effective and caring leadership and team management, initiative-taking and collaboration in multidisciplinary settings and across organizations.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work under pressure.
  • Strong analysis, research and writing skills..
  • Functionally bilingual in French and English.
