DRR and Resilience Advisor At Swedish Red Cross

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is at the core of what the Red Cross Red Crescent movement does. The International Department of the Swedish Red Cross (SRC) supports national societies within the Movement preparing before, during and after a crisis occurs. SRC has a strong focus on addressing the humanitarian consequences of climate change and is championing the inclusion of environment and climate considerations in humanitarian response.

Our present DRR Advisor is currently on an international mission, and we are therefore looking for a temporary replacement to our headquarters in Stockholm.

Your role in the organization

As a DRR and Resilience Advisor you are the thematic expert and responsible for quality assurance within Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience programming. You are part of the International Department and report to the Head of Policy and Thematic Support Unit.

Job duties and responsibilities

The primary task of the DRR and Resilience Advisor is to support our international staff in the programmatic activities in our countries of operation. You will also be working with methodological development and guidelines as well as policy and advocacy within the area of Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience building approaches. Furthermore, you are expected to follow developments within your area of expertise, to contribute to knowledge development and to function as a reference within the organization, as well as acting as the spokesperson for Swedish Red Cross regarding DRR and Resilience. Networking and maintaining a dialogue with strategic actors both within and outside the Red Cross/Red Crescent (RC/RC) Movement is also an important part of your role. The position implies international travel to complex areas of disaster and/or conflict with high security requirements.

Your profile

You are an experienced thematic advisor who understands that to be successful you must be able to work independently while also being a constructive team player with the ability to coordinate with peers with different levels of experience and knowledge in your area of subject matter expertise and related areas. You are both determined and reliable and can create and promote a stable and trusting working atmosphere.

You have strong analytical abilities and exercise sound judgment. You have the ability to take initiative and assume responsibility, and a willingness to question traditional methodologies and promote innovative approaches. You have excellent communication skills.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Academic degree, preferably within Disaster Risk Reduction, Disaster Management or Climate Change Adaptation (or other relevant area)
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience of disaster risk management and integrated programming within an international humanitarian context.
  • Professional international humanitarian field experience
  • Strong experience from applied understanding and application of Community Resilience Building approaches and working with community driven processes
  • Proven experience from working with Climate Change Adaptation and analyses
  • Personally developed network and experience of collaboration with other organizations and actors within international humanitarian work
  • Experience of media relations and/or representing the organization at seminars, panels, etc.
  • Excellent command of English as a working language

Desired qualifications and experience

  • Experience from work in the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement, including volunteer work.
  • Experience in Livelihood and/or Food Security
  • Experience from working with research driven approaches.
  • Command of Swedish and other languages (i.e. French, Arabic, Spanish or other)
  • Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) or equivalent
  • A manual driving license and experience in driving manual transmission vehicles.

Other information

The position is a temporary position (vikariat) located in Stockholm, with the possibility to work from home up to two days a week. The start date is as soon as possible. The temporary position runs until the end of March 2025, with the possibility for extension. Please note that this is a local contract and therefore you must be based in Sweden and have the legal right to work in Sweden.
