Education and Curriculum Development Specialist At International Rescue Committee

**Job Overview:**The Economic Empowerment department provides early employment, career development, financial coaching and asset-building, and small business development services to help clients achieve economic independence. Our educational programming works to ensure that the refugees and immigrants we serve have the skills and knowledge to become economically self-sufficient and resilient. The Education and Curriculum Development Specialist will work closely with team members to scope, design, and lead classroom-based (online, in-person, and hybrid) education including but not limited to Vocational English as Second Language (VESL), job readiness education, financial literacy education, nutrition education, digital literacy, and industry-specific and small business trainings. We anticipate that this position will involve approximately 40% instruction, 30% curriculum development, and 30% volunteer and intern training and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities: Include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as primary instructor and facilitator for economic empowerment-related education programming (key topics outlined above)
  • In consultation with department leads, design and iterate curricula incorporating adult learning principles and best practices for training programs based on the department’s needs.
  • Develop and provide onboarding curriculum and ongoing coaching and mentorship to department interns and volunteers; serve as their primary point of contact.
  • Serve as a teacher trainer to volunteers, interns, and staff delivering instruction by observing classes or 1:1 instruction and providing coaching and feedback incorporating pedagogical best practices.
  • Develop and administer student evaluation tools.
  • Maintain referral process and communication with program staff to ensure students are enrolled in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that programming and curriculum is linguistically sensitive and culturally relevant to client population, and classroom environment is welcoming to all students.
  • Manage student attendance and retention to maximize program impact and meet program goals.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive attendance records and case notes.
  • Coordinate with team members to provide strengths-based and holistic educational programming to students.
  • Occasionally, and in collaboration with relevant staff, design and deliver staff-facing trainings on a variety of topics.
  • Participate in all program meetings, staff development activities, and other duties as assigned.

Position Reports to: Economic Empowerment Manager

Position directly supervises: Volunteers and interns

Indirect Reporting: Economic Empowerment Program Coordinators

Other Internal and/or external contacts:

Internal: You will collaborate with internal programming including Early Employment and Career Development Departments, Financial Literacy Program Coordinator, Reception & Placement, and Health & Wellness.

External: You will develop working relationships with local service providers and community-based partners, as well as other stakeholders.

Job Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Education or another relevant field, or relevant work experience. TESOL (or similar relevant) certification a plus.
  • At least two years’ related professional experience; demonstrated experience developing and facilitating educational programming for underserved populations.
  • Experience working with adult learners from a variety of cultural and linguistic groups, and with multiple levels of English language skill required; work with newcomer populations desirable.
  • Experience designing curriculum and integrating technology utilizing Adult Education core principles.
  • Able to think creatively and strategically to overcome barriers and develop new program models.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, responsible, and flexible.
  • Self-starter with excellent analytical skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; fluency in a second language desirable
  • Driver’s license with reliable vehicle for occasional travel throughout the service delivery area

Working Environment:**

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.
  • Occasional travel to satellite and partner sites throughout the Bay Area
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
