Engagement Assistant – Kabul, Afghanistan (National) At Geneva Call

Mission

Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting respect for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence. Geneva Call’s mission is to ensure that armed groups and de facto authorities respect International Humanitarian Law and basic humanitarian principles in the areas where they fight or they control.

Role

The role provides technical, coordination and administrative support related to Geneva Call’s humanitarian engagement efforts (70%), which are translated into action plans and day-to-day tasks. The role is also intended to provide coordination, liaison, and administrative support (30%) to the Geneva Call Afghanistan Country Director.

Core responsibilities

The Engagement Assistant works under the supervision of the Engagement Manager.

  • Coordinate external meetings, prepare logistics, take notes, and writing meeting minutes & reports;
  • Collect, analyse, and utilize field level protection related data and feedback to identify opportunities to engage with communities and armed groups;
  • Provide support in design and development of GC’s humanitarian engagement strategy with de facto government armed groups, local constituencies, and CSOs;
  • Develop, maintain, and intensify contacts with de facto government authorities, armed group, relevant decision-making institutions, and key constituency members;
  • Support with developing a stakeholder mapping to ensure that Geneva Call is kept updated on the structures of local authorities and armed organisations at all levels including any changes;
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the Geneva Call’s humanitarian engagement approach, as well as its added value;
  • Draft official letters in Pasto/Dari to communicate formally with relevant local and national key stakeholders and document them;
  • Prepare reports in writing within maximum 24h and update GC senior management after each meeting and update MEAL system tracking on Geneva Call’s engagement activity;
  • Support CD on strategic/programmatic processes and logistics and update on any sensitive media/news;
  • Support CD on external meetings and take lead in organizing, note taking and admin support; and
  • On regular basis briefly, share with the CD upcoming country and regional political, social and strategic events that may have larger impact to GCs operations.

Additional responsibilities

  • Assume and take responsibility to carry out any other task/activities that are mission critical from Engagement Manager and the CD.

Main qualifications

Education and experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Political Science, International Relations, Communications, Social Science or any other relevant field.
  • Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Right Law (IHRL) is an asset.
  • Five years of working experience, with minimum 3 years in a humanitarian organization; and
  • Proven experience in engaging high-level interlocutors, in particular armed organizations and de facto authorities on humanitarian issues.

Technical skills

  • Communications, diplomatic and representation skills;
  • Coordination, arranging meetings, minutes taking and report writing;
  • Experience working in multicultural work settings;
  • Experience working in hostile or hazardous environments;
  • Skills working with the local and national authorities and armed organisations is required;
  • Positive, solution-oriented approach;
  • Upholds organizational and ethical norms; and
  • Translations skills from Pasto, Dari to English and vice versa.

Languages

  • Full professional proficiency in English, Pashto and Dari.

Personal skills

  • Strong communication, coordination and networking skills;
  • Ability to work independently under pressure, and handle numerous tasks simultaneously; and
  • Strong report writing and translation skills, case studies and producing paper and publications.
