Overview: This scope of work (SoW) outlines the Field Research Manager roles with COAR Global’s Ukraine team, known as Left Bank Analytics (LBA). The roles could be full or part time depending on the candidate. Successful candidates will be added to COAR/LBA’s Field Research Manager roster. Once candidates are added to our roster, they will be notified of specific openings which may be interested in, and become finalists for those positions. The Field Research Manager will oversee recruitment of, data collection from and supervise a cohort of Ukraine Field Researchers and Enumerators. The Researchers collect granular, factual data on life across Ukraine. Drawing on a deep knowledge of Ukraine, and the dynamics of the ongoing war, the Field Research Manager will handle all communications with Researchers across Ukraine, fulfill ongoing and ad hoc research requests from LBA’s Analysts. The Field Research Manager’s work will thus involve a mixture of working on designing data collection methods (which could include organizing key informant interviews, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, etc…) as well as overseeing real-time collection of qualitative data, supervision of field staff, fast-paced, and operational management. The successful candidate will report directly to the Project Team Lead, while responding to tasks from, and
working closely with, the Project Lead Analyst, Project analyst, and other internal stakeholders. The Field Research Manager will also have the support of the Research/Project Officer.

About COAR and LBA: COAR Global is an independent social enterprise that directly supports practitioners, policy-makers, and donors by facilitating humanitarian and development interventions in complex, fragile, and high-risk environments such as Syria, Myanmar, Lebanon and Libya. The Ukraine team is known as LBA.

Objectives:
● Contribute to the production of high-quality reports on the interaction between humanitarian, political, economic, security, social, governance, and migration dynamics in Ukraine, to be written by the Analysts;
● Ensure well designed data collection methods and timely collection of reliabile and accurate data collection through field networks and secondary sources;
● Work with Lead Project Analyst to adjust and optimize data collection questionnaires and process over time, through clarifying research questions as necessary;
● Help ensure activities undertaken by Researchers are conducted to maximize safety and minimize physical or reputational risk, taking into consideration the local context and Duty of Care responsibilities and policy;
● Contribute to preparation of analytical reports at the discretion and direction of Lead Analyst.

Responsibilities and Deliverables
The Research Manager will:
● Develop field research topics and questionaires in coordination with Researchers and Analysts;
● Be responsible for all field data collection, tasking (and overseeing) Researchers (and Enumerators) with ongoing and ad-hoc field data collection;
● Train Researchers on data collection methods, ensuring field data is timely and of high quality;
● Provide quality control on data collection by undertaking field interviews remotely;
● Serve as lead safety focal point, updating safety protocols for interaction with Researchers, and working to troubleshoot and/or mitigate any possible operational or security-related threats encountered by Researchers;
● Be responsible for finding, recruiting and training new Researchers in various locations, including in hard to reach areas;
● Help Lead Analyst to ensure that all data points collected are triangulated, corroborated, and collated;
● Compile and input research findings into LBA data management tools;
● Participate in writing analytical reports if desired;
● Manage and oversee all communication with Researcher cohort, and all administrative/payment/financial issues related to Researchers with help from Project Assistant, to ensure all Researchers have monthly invoices prepared, receive timely payments, etc…
● Review translations of English to Ukrainian products

Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate for the Research Coordinator will have:
● A Masters Degree in Journalism, Public Policy, Anthropology, Sociology or a related field. A master’s degree is desirable; consummate experience may be considered in lieu of relevant higher education;
● Three years of experience collecting and/or analyzing data for a research institution, think tank, publication, or NGO. Experience in organizing or collecting highly sensitive primary information from a field network, dialogue project, or sensitive areas is highly desirable;
● Experience designing and administering questionnaires, In depth interviews, Key informant interviews, and Focus Group discussions
● Three to five years of experience working in the humanitarian, stabilization, or development field;
● Native fluency in Russian and Ukrainian and professional-level English;
● Strong knowledge of and links to Ukraine;
● Strong interpersonal skills, a passion for cooperating with and helping people in difficult circumstances;
● Demonstrated ability to navigate local sensitivities with regards to data collection from individuals or groups in sensitive areas;
● Demonstrated ability and/or willingness to work under tight deadlines, provide real-time data points and analysis with accuracy, and availability to work off-work hours
