Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. We are in over 130 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. UNHCR is almost entirely funded by voluntary contributions from governments and private donors.

  • Title: Fundraising Campaigns Officer (PPH)
  • Duty Station: Copenhagen
  • Duration: 01 January – 31 December 2022
  • Contract Type: UNOPS International Specialist, Level IICA – 2 (or UNOPS Local ICA Specialist, Level LICA-10)
  • Closing date: 2nd December 2021

Organizational Context

Based at UN City in Copenhagen, UNHCR’s Private Sector Partnership Service (PSP) supports the Agency’s global collaboration with the private sector through its network of fundraisers and National Associations in 34 operations in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Gulf region and Africa. The growth in income secured from the private sector by UNHCR since 2006 has made PSP the private sector division growing the fastest amongst its peers in the first five years of its creation. Within PSP the Private Partnerships and Philanthropy (PPH) section is responsible for supporting fundraisers and markets to build and steward long-term relationships with businesses, foundations, and high net worth individuals.

Looking ahead our ambition is to achieve, by approximately 2027, the strategic goals of: (i) maximizing sustainable and flexible contributions from the private sector to raise $1 billion annually; (ii) strengthening engagement with the public through varied engagement strategies including campaigns to increase the number of supporters to 25 million; and (iii) broadening partnerships with foundations and corporations beyond financial support, to leverage the resources and influence of the private sector for the benefit of refugees and others of concern to UNHCR.

Recent global trends in giving are marked by increased earmarking from traditional donors, which reduces the UNHCR’s ability to quickly and impartially mobilize support for those forced to flee conflict and persecution. UNHCR aims to broaden its funding base and promote flexible giving. Thematic fundraising is an avenue to increase softly earmarked funding, and to garner support for underfunded priorities such as Education, Climate Change, Health, Gender Based Violence and others.

In this context, global fundraising and engagement campaigns, aligned with these thematic priorities, are a prioritized area of work due to their potential to raise significant income for under-funded areas of work and to help increase UNHCR’s brand equity. PSP campaigns are developed in project teams made up of experts across different disciplines to ensure they are designed to meet the unique needs of diverse donor audiences. The Fundraising Campaigns Officer (PPH) is core member of this project team, providing expertise on campaign design and execution for a PPH donor audience including corporations, foundations and private philanthropists to ensure effective delivery of campaigns to PPH partners. S/he will be under the direct supervision of the Head of Campaigns unit and the PPH Thematics unit lead.

Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this assignment is to assist in the effective delivery of global fundraising and engagement campaigns targeting a PPH audience, namely corporate partners, foundations and private philanthropists (individuals). He/she will work with PPH fundraisers across up to 34 markets to ensure that PPH-specific fundraising materials are developed in line with campaign goals, and to ensure the campaign strategy is embraced by PPH fundraisers, including through ongoing training and liaison with markets.

This work is a key contributor to the implementation of the PPH fundraising strategy and the achievement of PPH’s objectives in terms of fundraising and private sector engagement. This includes leveraging the capacities of campaigns to help build long lasting partnerships that go beyond resources and expand to advocacy, communications, marketing and public engagement.

In order to achieve results, the function will require a high level of engagement with PPH colleagues in multiple countries as well as donor insight in order to develop approaches that are evidence-based, endorsed and actionable. The ability to build effective working relationships with key internal and external project stakeholders at all levels of seniority is essential.
