Gender Technical Advisor Consultant – Roster At Heartland Alliance

Organizational Background: Heartland Alliance International (HAI) is a service-based human rights organization headquartered in Chicago whose mission is to secure the rights and well-being of marginalized people and communities. HAI envisions a world in which those whose rights have been violated are safe and empowered to actively engage in their communities and be at the forefront of social change. HAI is comprised of country offices in the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America and Caribbean regions implementing programs on a broad range of human rights issues globally, as well as the Chicago-based Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture, which serves individuals from more than 50 countries. HAI has significant expertise in the fields of trauma-informed mental health and psychosocial support and access to justice programming for survivors of rights abuses Across all of its programs, HAI promotes progressive, innovative approaches to human rights protections and gender equality.

Summary: HAI is looking for Gender Technical Advisor consultants to provide evidence-based technical support on gender and gender-based violence (GBV) to HAI programs globally. Pre-qualified consultant candidates will be included in a roster for assignments to be made on an as-needed basis. Assignments may include support to program development, including proposal design; further development of HAI’s gender equity and GBV standards and tools; capacity strengthening of HAI staff and local partners; and other tasks designed to improve program quality in the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America and Caribbean regions.

The Gender Technical Advisor will work closely with HAI’s Program Quality Team and in-country technical and program staff to ensure that gender equity lens and GBV programming is fully integrated with other technical areas, including mental health and psychosocial support, access to justice, child protection, and livelihoods programming. The Gender Technical Advisor will report to the Director of Program Quality, Growth and Innovation. This position can be based globally and will work remotely with possibility of international travel when needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Social Science, preferably in gender studies, international development, social work/welfare, or related technical field;
  • 7 or more years of professional work experience in gender equity and gender-based violence, including international work experience in humanitarian and/or development fields, preferably in the Middle East and North Africa (especially Iraq, Lebanon, Syria), Sub-Saharan Africa (especially Nigeria, DRC) and Latin America (especially Colombia, Dominican Republic);
  • Experience in program development including project design and proposal writing, preferably with US Government donors (e.g., USAID, PRM, DRL). Strong writing skills highly desirable;
  • Expertise in evidence-based approaches and international best-practice guidance in gender equity and GBV in humanitarian/development contexts; experience with USAID Gender Equality Policy highly desirable;
  • Experience integrating gender equity lens and GBV programming with other sectors, including mental health and psychosocial social support, access to justice/legal, and livelihoods highly desirable;
  • Experience with women’s empowerment programming and capacity strengthening from women-led civil society organizations highly desirable;
  • Experience with programming designed to support women’s wellbeing and safety in the workplace highly desirable;
  • Experience assessing staff adherence to gender equity and GBV standards and developing and conducting tailored training, coaching, and mentorship using participatory and practice-based approaches and remote modalities; ability to assess the needs of participants during the training experience and modify application of themes as appropriate;
  • Ability to articulate and explain gender and GBV core principles and practices to a non-expert audience and ensure their understanding of those subjects, as well as ensuring that the trainees are competent in implementing those principles and practices;

Languages:

  • Fluent in English
  • Spanish, French, Farsi, Arabic, Kurdish and/or other relevant languages a plus.
