The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide. This position is located in the Data Management Unit (DMU) of the Client Solution Delivery Section (CSDS) within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies Service (SGITT) at the United Nations Global Service Centre in Brindisi, Italy. The incumbent will report to the Chief DMU or other designated officer.

Responsibilities

With delegated authority, the Geospatial Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Supports the optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of geospatial data from a wide variety of sources into data pipelines, as well as the creation and maintenance of data catalogues. • Designs and develops solutions for geospatial data-related technical problems and data infrastructure. • Creates data models that can be used by different stakeholders at different levels. • Supports more senior staff in their work on data management process improvement mechanisms to optimize data delivery and greater scalability. • Contributes to the preparation of geospatial data sets, being responsible for the acquisition and cleaning of data from primary and secondary data systems and documents data sets used. • Contributes to the creation and maintenance of geospatial databases and services, and contributes to geospatial data collection projects, products, tools, and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices. • Contributes to the identification and analysis of patterns in geospatial data sets using various methods. • Designs and implements data pipelines to prepare and deliver geospatial data sets upon request; responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates geospatial data services. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job – Specific Qualification

Certification in Data Engineering, Data Management, Data Process development or related area is desirable Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in geospatial information, analysis, mapping data visualization, information management or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience with database programming languages (SQL, etc.) is required. Experience in designing geospatial data integration and data pipeline which must include ingesting data through different methods is required. Experiencing in data modeling and database management is required. Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Recruitment for this position is done on a local basis. This position is open for recruitment for an initial period of one year with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds. This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
