Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Assessment, Planning and Monitoring Branch, Coordination Division, in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies and natural disasters. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response effort. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.
The incumbent reports to the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) Coordinator.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority, the Graphic Design Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
•Participates in initial meetings with clients to discuss potential design projects, e.g. substantive content, communication objectives, media (including electronically published products) and design options, technical specifications, costs, schedules/deadlines, etc.
•Independently undertakes design assignments, including high priority requests, for a variety of UN-sponsored activities (e.g. major conferences, observances, events and campaigns, etc.); conceptualizes and develops design proposals for review by clients, which may include photographic, illustrative or more abstract graphic solutions.
•Prepares all approved designs in electronic format for final review and printing; reviews color and print proofs as required.
•Provides guidance and support throughout the project production process; coordinates and follows-up with clients and other relevant parties (e.g. copy and proofreaders, production staff, library and cartography staff, etc.) and ensures that project in on schedule.
•Performs other related work as required.
•Helps to curate raw data and develops interactive material for the GHO online platform.
•Plays a lead role in development the architecture and design elements of the GHO online platform.

Competencies

Professionalism: Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, design and layout. Knowledge of internal UN printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, page layout and photograph sizing. Knowledge of online design practices for virtual publications. Good graphic art skills and demonstrated ability to independently develop creative designs and produce high-quality graphic material for varied print media projects (e.g. posters, brochures, press kits, book covers, book designs, etc.). Ability to handle multiple design projects simultaneously. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Applicants will need to have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.

Work Experience

At t least seven (7) years of experience in publications production, including desktop publishing, graphic design and layout, or related area of which preferably two (2) years within the United Nations Common System is required.
Relevant experience working within the UN Common System or other comparable international organization is required.
Experience developing major public products for the UN common system or comparable national/international organizations is desirable.
Experience producing humanitarian public information products related to humanitarian affairs is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

The evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

The duration of the appointment on the post of Graphic Design assistant in the APMB of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Geneva will be for an initial period of 12 (twelve) months. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and the availability of the funds.
The selected candidate is expected to start as soon as possible. Please note that due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19 and the travel restrictions imposed by national authorities, the selected candidate may be required to start the assignment/appointment remotely, in agreement with the hiring manager, and until further notice.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-general and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
