a) To provide technical assistance and advice on effective and feasible laboratory diagnostic techniques in the context of the current circulation of arboviruses in the Region.
b) To provide technical advice and input to strengthen current virologic and serologic laboratory detection and to facilitate implementation of alternative laboratory techniques, adapted to the current epidemiological situation, and aimed at effectiveness and sustainability of measures.
c) To conduct assessments of national laboratories on regular basis (in-country missions);
d) Work in close collaboration with the clinical team for supporting safe health care procedures and provide guidance on appropriate collection, conservation and shipping (if necessary) of specimens for diagnosis of emerging viruses.
e) Provide technical support for the planning and implementation of training workshops, seminars, and direct cooperation and follow up with Member States to assist laboratory staff to address gaps in knowledge.
f) To generate and participate in the writing and construction of laboratory and surveillance guidelines and documents.
g) To generate and follow up projects regarding the implementation of new methodologies or new tools for diagnosis in different scenarios, including evaluation on the field.
h) Generate technical implementation reports and scientific articles regarding major activities developed as part of the assigned duties.
i) Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Education requirements (Qualifications)
Essential: Master’s Degree
Desirable: A PhD in Virology
Experience requirements
Essential: 9 years International Experience.
Languages
Expert knowledge of official UN languages, including English and Spanish. Knowledge of Portuguese or French would be an asset.
Skills
Demonstrated ability to effectively use a computer and utilize software programs such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, SharePoint, etc. Other IT skills and knowledge of other software programs such as Workday, Visio and Project would be an asset.
Location
The incumbent will be expected to perform this position’s duties and responsibilities remotely.
Expected contract duration
October 2021 to 31 August 2022 (with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding).
