Human Rights Analyst At Syria Justice and Accountability Centre

About the Consultancy:

The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is seeking consultants to support our justice efforts by processing documentation of violations by all sides of the conflict. Analysts will review, organize, and analyze documentation of human rights violations in Syria (such as videos, photographs, written documents, etc.) within a special database using SJAC’s methodology. Analyst’ efforts directly support criminal accountability for Syrian perpetrators in Europe, the search for missing persons, and advocacy efforts. No former experience in data analysis is required.

Successful applicants will be passionate about human rights, have a deep understanding of the Syrian context, and a strong attention to detail. Analysts are expected to work approximately 120 hours per month, but may work hours on their own schedule, as long as they are available for pre- scheduled meetings on a weekly basis. All analysts are eligible to participate in SJAC’s support programs, including confidential psychosocial support and a women-only peer support group for female team members. SJAC anticipates awarding up to 3 consultancy agreements for Analysts. Agreements will be made for one year, with an option for renewal.

General Duties

  • Process pieces of documentation into the SJAC data management system: Bayanat
  • Collaborate with team members to address issues and report on system bugs;
  • Review content (videos, pictures, reports, sound files, etc.) and extract information for use in analysis;
  • Accurately tag and label different pieces of information in the database according to SJAC’s guidelines, methodology, and standards;
  • Identify problematic areas and gaps in data and report to supervisors;
  • Perform data entry in Arabic and English;
  • Understand the context and background in which the content was created;
  • Be able to aggregate different pieces of information into groups and categories;
  • Work with other team members to address and resolve complex issues encountered during analysis;
  • Participate in regular team calls, and collaborate using online teamwork tools; Perform other tasks as needed;
  • Available to work 120 hours per month.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma;
  • Proficiency in Arabic (spoken and written) and English (especially written) are required;
  • Knowledge of Syria and the Syrian conflict (including Syrian Arabic dialects);
  • Willingness to watch and handle very graphic content;
  • Understanding or lived experience of the gender dynamics of the Syrian conflict is a plus;
  • Previous data entry experience preferred;
  • Basic proficiency using online forms and tools;
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to accuracy and detail;
  • Ability to handle confidential information;
  • Ability to function professionally and effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
