Human Rights Officer Asia Pacific At Centre for Civil and Political Rights

The Centre for Civil and Political Rights (CCPR) is currently recruiting a “Human Rights Officer Asia Pacific” as below.

Established and registered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Centre for Civil and Political Rights envisions the full implementation of and respect for all human rights worldwide, as proclaimed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which, as of June 2021, is ratified by 173 States. The Centre aims to fulfil this vision by promoting universal ratification of the ICCPR and enhancing its application by all stakeholders as well as implementation of the recommendations issued by the UN Human Rights Committee, the monitoring body of ICCPR, to the State parties. For this purpose, CCPR has been carrying out various activities to build capacity of national stakeholders, especially civil society, facilitate their constructive engagement with the HR Committee and holistic utilisation of UN Human Rights mechanisms, and assist their efforts to protect civil and political rights at a grassroots and national level. Throughout the years since its establishment, the Centre has been playing crucial role to amplify the impact of the work of the HR Committee and civil society engagement and established its unique profile in-between the national stakeholders and the Committee with experience and tangible results.

Job title: Human Rights Officer Asia Pacific (junior position)

Location: Recruited person is requested to be stationed in one of the countries in Asia Pacific, preferably South-East Asia. The position reports to Centre’s Regional Coordinator Asia Pacific.

Starting date: 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible

Duration: Initial contract for 12 months excluding the probation period of 3 months. Contract can be extended depending on the performance and available resource.

Responsibilities: Provide assistance to Regional Coordinator Asia Pacific in the implementation of Centre’s projects in in the region, including:

  • Documentation and reporting of activities;
  • Note taking during meetings and other events;
  • Communication and coordination with project partners;
  • Relevant administrative and financial work; and
  • Other duties as assigned by the Regional Coordinator Asia Pacific.

Requirements: Following qualifications are required:

  • A Master’s degree in relevant fields, preferably in human rights / international human rights law OR at least 3 years of professional work experience in the field of human rights / international human rights law;
  • Profound knowledge of international human rights law, in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR);
  • Fluency in oral and written English;
  • Being based in a country in Asia Pacific region.

Additional qualifications: Any of the following qualifications is considered as an asset:

  • Profound knowledge of UN Human Rights Mechanisms, in particular Treaty Body system;
  • Master’s degree in relevant fields AND more than 3 years of professional working experience in the field of human rights / international human rights law;
  • Profound knowledge of the human rights situation in a country or countries in Asia Pacific;
  • Fluency in at least one of the languages spoken in South East Asia;
  • Being based in a country in South East Asia.

Working hours: The position is 70% – 90% (full time = 40 hours per week)

Salary and benefits: Basic full-time monthly salary starts from $ 1200 *The exact amount of the salary will be decided based on the qualifications, the country of residence and working hours (%) of the recruited person.
