Hungary: Editorial Lead At Internews Network

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews seeks an Editorial Lead for a US government-funded project focused on championing a strong independent media sector in Armenia, Georgia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine that is resistant to powerful interests seeking to manipulate, isolate, or control the press. The Editorial Leadwill lead the development of country-specific and regional editorial policies and plans. They will oversee the work of local editorial coordinators in Georgia and Hungary and liaise with editorial coordinators in Armenia, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine hired by the local implementing partners. The Editorial Lead will oversee overall content output of media beneficiaries and consultant and third-party services under the project. Reporting to the Project Director, the Editorial Lead will identify, hire, and manage editorial consultants and experts as needed, and will be supported by local Editorial Coordinators.

LOGISTICS

Internews plans to open a field office in Hungary. Ultimately, this role will be based in Budapest, Hungary. However, you must have work authorization in this location that does not require sponsorship from Internews.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Work collaboratively with program staff to select qualified media outlets and content producers for program-supported grants, stipends, and technical assistance.
  • Conduct technical assessments of project beneficiaries to identify their needs and develop plans to address these needs; ensure that beneficiaries adhere to their plans to meet their stated goals.
  • As relevant, provide expert editorial trainings, mentoring, and consultations to local media outlets to improve their ability to produce engaging, convergent multimedia content, and/or streamline their newsroom operations.
  • In collaboration with the Project Director, oversee development of training and event agendas, including identifying regional and international thematic experts to serve as trainers, mentors, and speakers. Provide in-person training-of-trainers, trainings, online webinars, master classes, and panel sessions at events, as necessary.
  • Provide support to the establishment of regional and country-specific consultant pools to provide mentorship for journalists and content producers
  • Foster development of inclusive ties for program beneficiaries to develop productive working relationships and information exchange within the project countries and across the larger region.
  • Manage program technical staff experts to ensure that program beneficiaries receive high quality, targeted support.
  • Support program reporting, monitoring and evaluation data collection from partners as necessary.
  • Keep up to date on the latest technology, analysis and business trends in media.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Required:

  • At least five years of professional experience working as a media professional in areas related to editorial development; experience in newsroom management and editorial planning for digital media is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a media trainer, mentor, or consultant working to improve the quality, appeal, and reach of content, especially online.
  • Deep understanding of the media sector in the region, as well as specific knowledge of the technical challenges facing media outlets in the project countries.
  • Demonstrated staff management abilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a large international team; ability to build effective professional relationships across different countries and partner newsrooms
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze program progress and make strategic suggestions to adjust approaches to ensure program success, often within tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal, diplomatic, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to creatively problem-solve and provide ethical management.
  • English fluency required; Armenian, Georgian, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, and/or Ukrainian proficiency highly preferred.
