About Hivos and this role

Hivos is an international development organization guided by humanist values. Together with citizens and their organizations, we aim to contribute towards just, inclusive and life sustaining societies where people have equal access to opportunities, rights and resources. We work in partnership with others in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America on three impact areas: Civic Rights in a Digital Age; Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and Climate Justice. Our approach is solution driven, and we build wider movements for change by amplifying and connecting voices.

This role leads and coordinates the thinking and action externally and across Hivos in the Civic Rights in a Digital Age (CRDA) impact area. If you are an expert in at least two of the key issues that we work on with our partners – human rights, open governance and inclusion – don’t hesitate to send in your application. We’re looking for an innovative and solution-driven strategist with clear ideas for finding people-centered approaches to promoting civic rights and freedoms in a world that is increasingly digital but highly unequal, and for operationalizing Hivos’ strategy in measurable building blocks for program development and resource mobilization.

JOB CONTEXT

The Impact Lead Civic Rights in a Digital Age (IL-CRDA) is a member of the Strategy & Impact (S&I) department and reports to its head. The objective of both the S&I department and this role is to position Hivos as a global player, influence thinking and action to further the Civic Rights agenda, increase inclusion, and share best practices of Hivos’ programs and partners in our CRDA impact area. Hivos’ partners in the civic rights impact area include CSOs and other diverse civic actors including NGOs, independent media, creative actors, social enterprises and others.

The S&I team is jointly responsible for developing Hivos’ Strategic Compass and related strategies. The members coordinate and/or participate in the process of gathering, enriching and disseminating knowledge, evidence and ideas, and they make sure these all originate from and are supported by Hivos staff and stakeholders. S&I staff, and the Lead positions in particular, are also closely linked to the teams in charge of business development and program implementation.

The IL-CRDA works closely with:

  • diverse external stakeholders across civil society, media, government and where relevant, the private sector
  • other Impact Leads and DMEL colleagues in the S&I department
  • program and project managers across the organization to ensure that our strategies are implemented, and that the lessons learned from this advance our linking and learning agenda
  • the Business Development department to deliver building blocks, content and strategic inputs for designing new programs
  • the Executive Board, the Management Team, and the colleagues from the Communication unit to position Hivos globally

Our strategies for promoting local leadership and ownership of our partners will need to be further operationalized. The IL-CRDA will play a crucial role in realizing this.
