The main objective that AMERICARES FOUNDATION INC seeks to achieve with the implementation of this project is: to improve access to water and education/awareness opportunities related to WASH of the Wayúu indigenous communities in the rural area of ​​Riohacha, La Guajira.

This project seeks to improve access to water and promote healthy living habits with the Wayúu indigenous communities through the participatory improvement of the infrastructure of the artisanal wells through which they obtain water, community empowerment for the efficient management of water resources. and the promotion of healthy and hygienic lifestyle habits and the strengthening of food security and sovereignty of communities with community gardens. The improvement of the infrastructure of artisanal water wells is carried out through a water pumping system whose energy is obtained from solar panels taking advantage of the sunny conditions most of the year in the department and a water storage system. The well will also have an irrigation system.

  1. Carry out the evaluation/characterization of the land of the two Wayúu rancherías in order to identify the local conditions of the land.
  2. Do the soil study to know the characteristics and particularities of the land in the two ranches.
  3. Coordinate with the communities which seeds can be grown in accordance with these conditions and that are in accordance with their worldview and the best irrigation system for the crops.
  4. Design and adapt the gardens in the two Wayúu ranches with the respective irrigation systems in a participatory manner with the two Wayúu communities.
  5. Monitor crops and supervise that they develop correctly during the time of the consultancy.
  6. Train community members on garden care over time.
  7. Provide communities with technical information material on organic gardens and their correct functioning and care over time.
  8. Submit partial reports on contract execution and compliance to the contract supervisor with the periodicity indicated by him.
  9. Present final project implementation report with the specificities indicated by the contract supervisor.
