Background – Habitat for Humanity in Asia-Pacific
A world where everyone has a decent place to live
The need for adequate housing solutions in the Asia and Pacific region is immense. Based on the
United Nations data, half of the world’s poor — those living on less than US$1.90 a day — are in this region. Amid rapid urbanization, one in two slum dwellers calls Asia-Pacific home. A person living in Asia-Pacific is also five times more likely than someone living outside of it to be hit by a disaster, increasing the risk of losing his or her home.
Through shelter, we empower
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort, growing to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 70 countries. In the Asia-Pacific region since 1983, Habitat has supported millions of people to build or improve a place they can call home. We are active in Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. We work through partnerships in Mongolia, Timor-Leste, Samoa and Tonga.
Asia-Pacific Housing Forum
The Asia-Pacific Housing Forum (APHF) is a biennial two-day conference that gathers under one roof major stakeholders engaged in seeking solutions to affordable housing issues and promotes decent housing as a driver of economic growth. Held for the nineth time in 2023, the Asia-Pacific Housing Forum provided space for housing sector players to learn, collaborate and maximize our collective efforts to position housing as a key driver of sustainable cities and communities and promote innovation.
The 9thn iteration of APHF will be held on 26-27 October 2023 in Suwon South Korea and is expected to bring together experts and major stakeholders in extensive discussions on low-cost housing issues in the Asia-Pacific. The anticipated number of in-person participants is 250-300.
APHF Innovations Awards
Within the framework of the 9th APHF, Habitat for Humanity is organizing an innovations awards contest which seeks to promote and reward groundbreaking work of housing practitioners, product producers and policy makers to create new approaches to improve housing conditions for low- income households at scale.
