Purpose and Objectives:
Asian Disaster Prepared Center (ADPC) is an autonomous international organization with a vision to reduce disaster and climate risk impacts on communities and countries in Asia and the Pacific by working with governments, development partners, international organizations, NGOs, civil society, private sector, media, and other key stakeholders. Established in 1986 as a technical capacity building center, ADPC has grown and diversified its expertise across social and physical sciences to support sustainable solutions for risk reduction across a broad range of specialist areas. With over 100 staff from 19 different nationalities and a wide range of professional expertise from atmospheric scientists to social scientists with experiences from all levels of engagement typically required for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Resilience (CR) in an effective manner. ADPC is a competent regional resource center and has seven thematic departments: ADPC Academy, Risk Governance, Climate Resilience, Urban Resilience, Health Risk Management, Preparedness for Response and Recovery, Geospatial Information. These are supported by Finance, Human Resources and Administration, and Strategic Planning departments. In addition to the departments, ADPC works on three cross-cutting themes: Gender and Diversity, Poverty and Livelihoods, and Regional and Transboundary Cooperation through permanent working committees.
ADPC with the financial support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) is implementing five years project, titled “Urban Resilience to Climate Extremes in Southeast Asia” (URCE). The project aims to build “resilient communities in deltaic and coastal urban areas” and strengthen resilience of urban systems and urban communities to the current and emerging climate extremes, disaster and emergencies that are anticipated in coming years in Southeast Asia.
Under Outcome 4 of URCE project, a major activity is to map sectoral policies (urban, water, infrastructure, transport, agriculture, energy) and establish climate linkages and develop an inventory for the East Asia and the Pacific region. To expedite the process of carrying out policy assessment, mapping and inventory development, assistance is required at ADPC Bangkok office. The assignment of the proposed intern will carry out sectoral policy mapping, review climate linkages and develop inventory. The intern will be stationed at ADPC Bangkok office for a period of three (03) months and will also be responsible for documenting the process as well as outcomes of the analysis being carried out. The Intern will provide support to the program team in advancing the activities in Asia and the Pacific through targeted and innovative communications within the scope of ADPC’s vision, mission, and goals.
Expected Outputs:
- Map the legislative documents (Law, Act, Decree) and executive documents (Policies, Guidelines, Plan, Strategy, Framework) from secondary sources for urban, water, infrastructure, transport agriculture, energy sectors in East Asia and the Pacific,
- Develop an inventory in prescribed format for legislative documents (Law, Act, Decree) and executive documents (Policies, Guidelines, Plan, Strategy, Framework) and establish climate and disaster linkages highlighting key priorities and findings,
- Report on key findings and gaps in legislative documents (Law, Act, Decree) and executive documents (Policies, Guidelines, Plan, Strategy, Framework) documents of urban, water, infrastructure, transport, agriculture, energy sector.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Conduct a systematic online review of legislative documents (Law, Act, Decree) and executive documents (Policies, Guidelines, Plan, Strategy, Framework) documents for urban, water, infrastructure, transport agriculture, energy sectors in East Asia and the Pacific;
- Download and collate all the legislative documents (Law, Act, Decree) and executive documents (Policies, Guidelines, Plan, Strategy, Framework) documents;
- Develop an inventory in prescribed format;
- Maintain a monthly event calendar;
- Perform any other tasks assigned by the URCE Program Management Team
Working Principles:
Under the overall supervision of the Climate Resilience (CLR) Department Director, and direct supervision of the Senior Technical Specialist, the intern will be responsible for supporting the program team for assigned tasks.
The intern shall:
- Respect the laws and regulations of the country of the internship placement as well as the internal regulations of the Host Organization
- Be present at the ADPC offices during normal working hours from Monday to Friday 08:30 am.-05:30 pm. unless carrying out field or academic work
- Be entitled to public holidays according to the ADPC Bangkok Office Official Holiday calendar.
ADPC shall:
- Undertake to provide the intern with a satisfactory working environment, including office spaces and access to relevant documentation and standard office equipment
- Provide a clear induction process (including security measures) within the first two weeks of the internship, and assist the intern in her/his integration in the team/organization/project internal and external stakeholders
- Assign meaningful tasks that are relevant to skills use and development interests explicitly expressed above or emerge during the internship
- Engage in regular dialogue with the intern to review the internship experience
- Assist the intern in accessing the required information to complete Lund University’s academic assignments
- Sufficient time 1-4 hours a week will be given to the intern during the workdays to balance internship-related tasks with required academic work. Refine this ToR at the start of the internship.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or advance degree in Climate Change, Disaster Risk Management, Geography, or other relevant fields;
- Exemplary English writing and editing skills;
- Advanced computer literacy – including presentation software, publishing, MS Office;
- Excellent interpersonal and coordination skills, and ability to work with a team in a multi-cultural environment;
- Possess excellent problem-solving and analytical skills;
- Knowledge of video/multimedia production, email newsletter tools; and
- A strong desire to learn and undertake new challenges.
Duty Station: Bangkok
Duration: 1 April 2023 to 30 June 2023
Itinerary:
- Intern will be based in Bangkok Office. ADPC will provide the visa supporting documents.
- Interns are responsible for all costs related to joining the internship duty which is included but not limited to visa application fees and related costs to visa, and health insurance certificate covering the entire internship period, airfares, and arrangements for travel, accommodation and living expenses.
