Organizational Context and Scope:

Background Information

The IOM Office to the United Nations (UN) has responsibility for and enhancing IOM’s collaboration with the UN, diplomatic missions, and nongovernmental organizations, including through contributing to improving understanding of migration issues, facilitating international migration policy dialogues, and representing IOM and migration issues conferences, meetings, and seminars. In 2023, there will be a number of high-level UN events and processes of significance relevance and importance to IOM.

The IOM Office to the UN contributes to improving the understanding of IOM’s mandate and action by relevant governmental, UN and NGO stakeholders, in accordance with the IOM constitution, the IOM strategy adopted in 2007 and relevant council deliberations and resolutions. Serving as IOM’s conduit into the international area, the IOM Office to the UN is charged with providing IOM offices worldwide with analysis and insights on issues and themes discussed at the main organs of the UN including the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council and increasing strategic engagement.


Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Director of IOM Office to the United Nations and the direct supervision of one of the Office’s Team Leads, the successful candidate will provide: (i) overall support to the office and (ii) specific support to specific Units to help ensure that IOM can engage in all relevant processes, events and other fora. Tasks will include support to meeting representation and drafting of strategic notes for file; support to drafting of reports, statements, and background documents; liaison and coordination. Office-wide support will be provided to all Units as needed.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

1. Support the Office in the preparation for key UN and intergovernmental events and processes taking place in New York and elsewhere, including through coordination with internal and external stakeholders, tracking and updating team and office calendars and other scheduling tools, drafting and reviewing output documents and media materials, taking notes and preparing summaries of inter-governmental, inter-agency, IOM internal and other meetings.

2. Attend and report on UN meetings of strategic importance, such as at the Security Council, the General Assembly, ECOSOC, various commissions, informal consultations among UN Member States, etc. as well as operational interagency meetings with specific focus on priority thematic issues and regions and research, identify and analyse trends, policies, dynamics and positions on humanitarian, peace and security issues as needed.

3. Support planning, organizing and facilitation of webinars and online meetings, including sending invitations and managing attendance, and working with the Office Administrative Unit in arranging logistics for in-person events, meetings and TDYs as necessary.

4. Support the Office in organizing and maintaining common/SharePoint drives for online knowledge management and contribute to office-wide knowledge development and sharing efforts, by actively participating in internal brown-bag sessions and seminars.

5. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training components and learning elements

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to interact with a team of experienced humanitarian, peace, and security professionals, contribute toward the development of interesting local and global initiatives and gain in-depth experience in working with the UN Secretariat, UN agencies, the Members States on policies, programmes, and funding.

Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • University degree in Public Administration, International Relations, Political Studies, Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution.


· Experience in maintaining and updating databases and crowd data storage is an asset.

Experience in drafting or preparing meeting minutes, summaries and talking points for conferences and discussions is an asset.

– Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;

– Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.


  • Fluency in Oral and Written English is required.

Eligibility and Selection:

The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM
programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations
and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
