Overview of position:

  • Our client is piloting a targeted, market driven approach to sustainable fuel solutions in South Sudan. The proposal is to introduce a sustainable alternative to wood based fuel using the non native water pest, the water hyacinth to create a high impact, high return on investment for communities close to waterways. The project expects to have a multiplier impact on markets & livelihoods by reducing the cost of fuel, minimizing the drudgery & risk exposure of women when collecting firewood & opening up waterways for improved access & trade & facilitating return of aquatic food systems, among others.
  • The consultant will conduct an assessment of the current cooking stove to identify a comprehensive roadmap & business plan for scaling up locally produced efficient cooking stove adapted to water hyacinth based charcoal. The consultant will help set up the production & the introduction of the new stove into local markets.

Key accountabilities (not all inclusive, within delegated authority):

  • Understanding availability of local materials & viability of locally introducing / promoting efficient fuel stove.
  • Develop efficient stoves.
  • Develop production process.
  • Conduct interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD’s) with local community targeted groups.
  • Produce situational analysis of strategies, policies & programs as well as institutional capacities for developing efficient stove value chain.
  • Identify requirements needed to viably introduce the product to the local markets & make it competitive enough to reach critical mass.
  • Train identified groups on marketing of the efficient stove.
  • Provide a rationale for the development of a sustainable fuel supply chain in Unity state by identifying the main steps, key actors to promoting a more market driven approach to fuel & capacity building & technical assistance requirements.
  • Develop heat retention device to improve in efficient use of cooking fuel.

Expected results:

  • Key accountabilities above implemented & achieved in a timely & high quality manner & a comprehensive business plan for efficient stove supply chain in Bentiu that includes a map of stakeholders, next steps & a roadmap for a market driven approach.

Project reporting:

  • This role reports to the line manager.

Key competencies:

  • Relevant educaition in Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, Business Management or other related field, or related work experience.
  • Significant technical experience in biomass / bioenergy fuel production & stove design & production, clean energy manufacturing processes, development of production line design processes & business management.
  • Fluent in English language.

Team management:

  • This role has no team management responsibility.
