Diálogo Intercultural Mexicano A.C (DIME) is a humanitarian, neutral, secular, and non-profit organization of Mexican civil society that promotes intercultural dialogue to contribute to a future that is equitable, diverse, and harmonious, where each individual can develop their full potential. DIME addresses the challenge of forced migration through multisectoral programs that mobilize university communities to catalyze their capacities and achieve their goals. DIME forges partnerships with higher education institutions, international agencies, civil society, and the private sector. Since 2015, DIME has experience in receiving and integrating refugees into the higher education system in Mexico.

Since 2021, DIME has worked hand in hand with the United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI)implementing the U.S. Mexico Border Program. This collaboration has resulted in a transition in which the two organizations come together to expand the impact of the programs.

USCRI, established in 1911, is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to addressing the needs and rights of refugees and immigrants. USCRI, in collaboration with its affiliates, provides legal, social, and health services to refugees, unaccompanied migrant children, survivors of trafficking, and other immigrants in the 50 states, El Salvador, Honduras, Kenya, and Mexico. USCRI advocates for the rights of refugees and immigrants both nationally and globally, helping to drive policies, practices, and laws.

About the internship program

DIME’s internship program seeks for people who have different profiles to support the team in different areas of the organization. The applicants will be matched to an area or program based on their motivations, interests, previous experiences, academic background and skills.

Job Specifications: Full-time. In the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico. No salary, but small compensation and housing including services granted.

Work experience: Previous experience in work, internships or volunteering in the humanitarian sector, with NGOs, or in areas related to human rights, vulnerable populations or migration is desirable.

Studies: Bachelor’s degree completed or currently a student in International Relations/Political Science/Communication/Social Work or related studies.

*Master’s degree is desirable.

Language: Proficient in English and Spanish, or good command of oral, written and reading comprehension skills in either one of the two languages or both.

Computer skills: Excellent domain of Microsoft Office and Google Suite (Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides).

Evaluations: The positions are subjected to mid-term performance review.

Internship period: July to December (6 months).

Responsibilities

The responsibilities will be related to the specific area of the internship, the following is a brief description of the intern’s role in each area.

Programs Management

Is the area that manages efforts with the DIME programs coordinators in order to follow up on the implementation.

The objective of the intern in this area is to support DIME´s Program Director and the organization’s programs to plan, supervise, and meet the objectives

Tasks may include:

  • Attend internal and external meetings with different stakeholders to take notes and potentially follow up on meetings.
  • Create a news brief to track any important updates regarding the programs
  • Support the programs in creating documents and material, including manuals, reports, and presentations
  • Create tools that facilitate the program management of the organization, including updating the Program Coordination Manual
  • If required, help programs in small tasks of the program implementation (participate in interviews, translate documents, participate in meetings, organize a visit and others).

Strategic Development and Engagement (SDE)

SDE is the area of DIME that aims to ensure the sustainability of the organization through institutional and individual fundraising, maintaining and strengthening existing partnerships with donors, analyzing the impact of DIME’s activities, and other actions that define and align with the broader organizational strategy. This includes activities such as writing grant proposals, preparing donor and internal reports, mapping new funding opportunities, and tracking and analyzing progress toward the objectives of the organization’s programs and areas.

Tasks may include:

  • Identify relevant stakeholders, potential allies, forums and events.
  • Assist in the production of material for project development (e.g., proposals, manuals, budgets, project brochures and formats).
  • Research and gather information on refugee issues, UNHCR, foundations, specific organizations, etc.
  • Assist in activities related to the monitoring and evaluation of DIME projects as well as in the writing of narrative reports for donors.

Communication

The Communication area of DIME is responsible for developing and applying DIME’s institutional identity by creating audiovisual products within the organization and addressing the communication needs of all other programs and areas. Additionally, the Communication area deploys the Habesha Media program, which serves as the creative agency of DIME. As such, Habesha Media designs and develops high-quality, audiovisual products, such as animation, web, editorial, and graphic design services for like-minded institutions and organizations in the fields of education and human rights. Habesha Media’s work aims to expand, inform, and engage audiences through new narratives on topics such as forced displacement, international migration, intercultural dialogue, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The objective of the intern in this area is to support the area in following, implementing and expanding DIME’s communication strategy. Actively support community management and social media content creation. Help with various logistics and administrative tasks. Enrich the area with a new set of skills, ideas and a fresh perspective.

Tasks may include:

  • Generate various audiovisual products (sensibilization videos, podcasts, reports, documentaries, etc.) and be involved in planification, shooting, production and post-production and editing phases.
  • Produce photography and/or audiovisual products for the documentation and
  • sharing of activities and events implemented by DIME on social media.
  • Assist the Creative Director in the realization of various communication products and strategies.
  • Social media content creation and management.
  • Provide assistance to Strategic Development and Engagement on the creation of applications and quotations for Habesha Media.

Welcoming Communities

The Welcoming Communities program aims to mobilize university communities to improve institutional capacity in Mexico’s higher education system and achieve systemic change in Mexican civil society by creating communities strengthened by greater cultural diversity through more inclusive practices for welcoming refugees and migrants. Currently the projects of this program are Student Committees, the Council for Refugees in Mexico and the Advisory Council for Higher Education Institutions on Forced Migration.

The objective of the intern in this area is to support the implementation of the three projects of the program: University Network, Local Student Committees (LSC) and DIME Refugee Student Council. (RSC) Implement projects to consolidate the area through the creation of various tools and documents, research for the radar of the area and locating potential partners.

Tasks may include:

  • Creation and updating of internal tools for the program.
  • Communication with the LSC and RSC DIME with supervision and in coordination with the Welcoming Communities team.
  • Creation of manuals, presentations, documents, tables, and other relevant instruments for the projects and its activities.
  • Update and follow up on the google share drive.
  • Actively support the organization of the events in person or online of each project.
