BBC Media Action, the international development charity of the British Broadcasting Corporation, is advertising a range of job opportunities for freelancers for the Al-Kul platform in Libya.

We use media and communications to reduce poverty, advance development goals, and support people to understand their rights. We do this by partnering with media, civil society, and others to produce creative programming and other outputs that inform and engage audiences on key development issues. We also strengthen the media sector by building the professional capacity and infrastructure of local media organizations in the countries where we operate.

Our North Africa base is our Tunis office. We manage a range of media projects in Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, ensuring they are delivered on time, to the highest possible standards, and in line with BBC editorial values ​​and BBC Media Action best practice.

We are currently looking for talented freelancers to perform the following positions:

  • Researcher and author of digital textual content
  • Digital Visual Content Producer
  • Digital video editor
  • Digital Video Journalist

We recognize that many professionals have talents and skills that span multiple roles. Therefore, we encourage applicants to include multiple positions in their application if they have the right skills. For example, a video journalist may also have the ability to work as a researcher, script writer, content producer, or video editor and could potentially earn more than one contract.

Freelance researcher and digital content writer

Scope of work and arrangements

The job holder is expected to conduct research, collect and verify information to support the production of content related to the public interest. He/she is also expected to draft and proofread textual content before publishing it, to be of high quality and attractive to the audiences of the “All” platform. In addition to presenting and suggesting ideas for producing new types of digital content.

The freelancer will be assigned a range of topics on a weekly basis. Working arrangements and wages will be negotiated during the selection and contracting process.

Main tasks:

  1. Conduct research, gather and verify information to support the production of content that is of public interest and relevant to the “everyone” audience.
  2. Suggest ideas for producing new types of content, including infographics and videos.
  3. Producing and proofreading original, engaging text content for an “all” audience.
  4. Ensure that all content is grammatically correct and consistent with the style and editorial line of the “All”.
  5. Support the production and development of graphics and video content based on research and information gathering.
  6. Collaborate with content producers, graphic designers, and video production team to ensure effective communication and content production.

Main outputs

  • Reliable, high-quality, engaging written text content including short posts, blogs, and social media captions.
  • Text and data that can be converted into graphs or videos.

Required: Skills, knowledge and experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field. – At least three years of experience in journalism and content writing in Libya. – Experience in meeting the needs of Libyan digital audiences and/or familiarity with the Libyan context. – Excellent research skills to gather accurate and relevant information on a variety of topics, and the ability to effectively integrate information into writing. – Ability to adapt writing style and tone to suit different digital platforms and Libyan online audiences. – Ability to take editorial values ​​into account when writing digital textual content. – Familiarity with different digital platforms, including social media, websites, and email newsletters. – Evidence of previous work that demonstrates a broad range of writing abilities. – Experience working in teams remotely or in person.

Freelance Digital Visual Content Producer (Videographer/Photographer)

Scope of work and arrangements

The incumbent will be expected to be responsible for capturing high-quality images and videos for use in producing digital visual content for publication on the All Platform and associated promotional materials. This role requires a deep understanding of the All Platform and the ability to creatively express key development issues in a visual manner.

The freelancer will be assigned a weekly set of photos/videos. Working arrangements and wages will be negotiated during the selection and contracting process.

Main tasks:

  1. Capture high-quality photographs and video footage that meet the professional and editorial requirements of the All Platform and aesthetic standards.
  2. Ensure that submitted images and videos are well-organized, engaging and in line with editorial standards and pre-commissioning from the editorial department.
  3. Close collaboration with the editorial team and participation in planning sessions to understand the various professional business requirements.
  4. Covering all aspects of video and photo production, including set-up and mobile filming.
  5. Movement within Libya according to the needs of the assigned topic.

Main outputs

  • Deliver high-quality, ready-to-use images and videos according to a pre-defined plan and schedule.
  • Visual content that is consistent with the BBC’s editorial values ​​and the technical standards of the All platform.

Required skills, knowledge and experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in journalism, photography, communications or a related field. – Minimum of three years’ experience as a videographer/photographer, preferably in a media, non-profit or development context. – Experience catering to the needs of Libyan digital audiences and/or familiarity with the Libyan context. – Proficiency in mobile photography and the use of professional mobile-friendly photography equipment. – Familiarity with various digital platforms, including social media and websites, and an understanding of how content is consumed on these platforms. – Provide evidence of previous work including a portfolio of photos and videos. – Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines. – Strong communication and collaboration skills. – Willingness to travel within Libya on a frequent basis.

The Freelance Video Editor will be expected to transform raw video footage, images and other visual elements into a polished, final audiovisual product suitable for publication that is aligned with the specific editorial needs of the All Platform. This role requires a deep understanding of editorial values ​​and technical standards and the ability to express key development issues creatively and imaginatively. The selected candidate will work as a freelancer and will be assigned weekly

Main tasks:

  1. Editing raw video footage to create a final audio-visual product suitable for publication on the All platform.
  2. Use video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
  3. Collaborate with the editorial team of the “All” platform to exchange ideas and develop a variety of content outputs.
  4. Participate in planning and review sessions with the project team.
  5. Employ special effects, music, voiceover, and other elements to create engaging video content.
  6. Maintain a consistent style and tone across all video content.
  7. Incorporate the visual elements, color palette, and other technical standards of the All Platform into the final audiovisual product.

Main outputs

  • Provide professionally edited videos that are in line with the pre-commissioning of the All Editorial Team and adhere to BBC editorial standards.
  • Deliver all edited videos according to the agreed timeline for each project.

The role requires a deep understanding and ability to express creatively the key development issues we address. The selected candidate will work as a freelancer and will be assigned on a weekly basis.

  1. Find interesting story ideas that are relevant to your “everyone” audience.

  3. Writing video scripts, filming and editing video content.
