Caritas Switzerland has been active in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) since 1993. Its country strategy has a strong economic determination focussing on economic and market system development to generate or increase income and create jobs nationwide. It has a nationwide reputation for its innovative and upscaling energy efficiency strategy and tackles the challenges of in- and outbound migration. In cooperation with international and national partners and the private sector, Caritas Switzerland applies systemic approaches to improve economic perspectives and livelihoods.

We are searching for a motivated and enthusiastic young graduate who is excited to deepen her/his experience in the breadth of strategic and operational tasks of an international cooperation programme in the country of implementation.

You will be part of a team of around 20 national and international experts, supporting the Country Director as well as the administrative experts and working closely with the operational project staff. This position requires you to be flexible in order to respond to possible ad-hoc requests while keeping track of the various specific and general tasks of programme implementation. However, depending on your specific interests and competencies, you can also take increasing responsibility for your preferred area of activity within the country programme. This one year offers you a unique learning opportunity to immerse yourself in the day-to-day business of international development cooperation and thus prepares you well for a career in this field.

Your duties

  • Contribute to the implementation of the current country strategy in all its stages and aspects including further development of the strategy for partner collaboration or the development of the new country strategy for 2026-2030
  • Participation in project design/drafting, including contribution to proposal development for fundraising
  • Needs-based support to project staff in implementation and monitoring of running projects as well as reporting to Caritas Switzerland Head Office in Switzerland and (inter-)national donors
  • Support organization of project evaluations and audits in coordination with the Country Director and the responsible project staff
  • Contribution to conceptualization of Caritas Switzerland approaches and context analysis
  • Partial responsibility for smaller projects or initiative (e.g. financed by embassies)
  • Represent Caritas Switzerland in liaison and coordination with national and international organizations and partners
  • Contribute to local communication, e.g., social media appearances
  • Contribute to planning of Caritas Switzerland 30 years’ anniversary (in 2026)
  • Support and facilitate compliance at the Country Office level

Our requirements

  • University degree or equivalent education in the field of international cooperation
  • Interest in professional and academic advance in the area of international cooperation and development work
  • Quick learner and good apprehension
  • Analytical and strategic competencies
  • Independent and well-structured way of working, maintain the overview also in hectic times
  • Ability to work under pressure and flexibility to adjust work priorities based on need
  • Very good communication and editorial skills
  • Very good knowledge of English in speaking and writing; knowledge of German is an asset
  • Expertise with Office software applications, digital data management and virtual interaction tools
  • Readiness to work with Church representatives and institutions

Your place of work will be Sarajevo with frequent travels nationwide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Starting date: 01.09.2023
Contract duration: 1 year
