Laboratory Technician- National Position At International Medical Corps

Over the past 29 years, International Medical Corps (IMC) has made significant contributions to saving lives,alleviating human suffering, and reducing the economic and social impact of disasters in Somalia through targetedassistance for Health, Nutrition, Protection and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) with support from several donors including USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), Department for International Development (DFID), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. IMC currently operates in 4 regions of Somalia (Banadir, Middle Shabelle, Bay & Mudug South) operating both secondary and primary health care services including Hospitals, Health Centers, Primary Health Units, Mobile Health & Nutrition Teams and communityaspects. IMC is in the

process of establishing kidney dialysis centers in Mogadishu and Hargeisa and thus Biomedical Engineer is vital for smooth functioning of the center.

INTRODUCTION

This position will be available contingent upon award of grant to International Medical Corps

JOB PURPOSE

He/she will be responsible for processing specimens, performs test procedures, make preliminary interpretations, maintains equipment, perform quality control, troubleshooting, coordination, supervision, training & reporting.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable support. The tasks listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

□ Participate in specimen collection when required according to test requested, either directly by venipuncture or skin puncture; maintain responsibility for patient identification, specimen labeling and collection verification, or instructing patients or other healthcare providers in collection and preservation techniques for blood, urine, stool, scrapings, autologous/directed donations, or other specimens for analysis.

□ Design and execute laboratory testing according to standard procedures, make observations and interpretfindings.

□ Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions.

□ Set up, evaluate and operate current and new equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory tests and assume adequate responsibility to maintain operations including preventive maintenance.

□ Coordinate the preparation and quality assurance of culture media, chemicals, reagents, stains and solutions asappropriate.

□ Evaluate collected laboratory data and prepare reports assessing accuracy, completeness, timeliness, progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

□ Participate in the development of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.

□ Provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff and other employees; arrange teaching or rotation schedules for students and new employees.

□ Participate in various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, training, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules as and when and where appropriate.

□ Monitor Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Safety and Inspection Control practices to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.

□ Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment.

□ Monitor workflow, assessment of staffing levels and reassignment as needed. Follow up to ensure work iscompleted.

□ Utilize various laboratory and hospital information systems and software.

□ Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicatestatus.

□ Interact courteously with doctors, nurses, facility supervisors and health coordinator, director and other healthcare providers when answering questions or providing other information about a patient’s results.

□ Help coordinate participation for lab inspections and work with inspectors.

□ Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test results.

□ Ensure Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) safety standards and in place at facility and adhered to.

□ Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderlyenvironment.

□ Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility.

□ Organize necessary referral of specimen as and when required.

□ Protecting the rights of the patients and ensure confidentiality.

□ Train & supervise national staff.

□ Ensure documentation and reporting of activities and services at the facility.

□ Participate in regular staff meeting at the facility.

□ Contribute to quantification and assessments of Laboratory supplies needs at the facility, more so on medicalcommodities.

□ In collaboration with the facility supervisor ensure equitable use of resources at the facility and ensure rational use of supplies.

□ Work on any other tasks that may be assigned by the supervisor.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

IMC is a humanitarian organization involved in emergency programmes. All IMC staff are to be flexible and willing to assist in IMC operations as and when required.

Academic Qualifications:

□ Degree in Laboratory science from accredited University.

□ Registered by Association or board or equivalent body of Laboratory technicians of respective country and with a valid registration and license.

□ Minimum 3 years working experience as Renal Laboratory technician in Kidney dialysis centre or a nephrology unit lab.

□ Ability to lead a team and train junior laboratory staff.

□ Knowledge of interpreting finding or readings at dialysis machine.

□ Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards etc.).

□ Ability to work autonomously and under pressure.

□ Good organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

□ Commitment to Humanitarian Principles.

□ Computer literate.

□ Language, Fluent in English and Somalia language is an added advantage.

□ Flexible and accountable.

□ Diplomatic, maintains confidentiality and respects of medical ethics.

□ Ability to work in a multicultural environment..
