Scope
IISD hosts the Secretariat to the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Metals, Minerals and Sustainable Development (IGF), and the Law & Policy Advisor will support the work of the IGF Secretariat. The Law & Policy Advisor contributes to the implementation of legal and policy research and outputs, analysis for evidence-based policies, and the delivery and development of projects across all IGF programs.
The work will include engagement with member governments as well as support for senior IGF staff in developing reports and publications and hosting events that advance good practices in sustainable development and resource governance. The candidate should enjoy diversity in their workday and have a passion for learning. Some international travel will be required. The Law & Policy Advisor will report to the Senior Law Advisor, IGF.
Responsibilities
- Conduct primary and secondary research and draft legal and policy outputs to the required standard, including policy briefs, research reports, and technical reports.
- Conduct Secretariat outreach and engage with IGF member governments in Africa.
- Collaborate with IGF Secretariat staff, affiliates, partners, and consultants in the design and implementation of projects.
- Keep up-to-date with emerging issues related to various IGF programs.
- Prepare, present, and communicate high-quality research findings to a variety of audiences.
- Support the organization and documentation of webinars, meetings, and public consultations as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate or master’s degree in law from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Fluent in English and French.
- 5-10 years of legal and/or policy research experience.
- Superior writing skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, work collaboratively with a multicultural team, and take the initiative in advancing or leading projects with minimal supervision when needed.
- Experience undertaking primary and secondary research.
- Experience related to sustainable development, international development, or resource governance in Africa

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and locations.
