Fair Trials has a broad portfolio of work in comparative legal analysis in criminal justice across multiple jurisdictions, and an established track-record as a trusted voice on criminal justice reform in Europe.

Across the European Union we:

  • Coordinate an EU-wide network of criminal justice experts and deliver legal training
  • Tackle the big issues in criminal justice through research, campaigns, policy work, and strategic litigation;
  • Provide advice and analysis to legal professionals and policymakers;
  • Provide information and referrals to individuals facing the criminal system;

We are recruiting a Legal Officer (full-time) to be based in Fair Trials Brussels office. This post will support Fair Trials’ legal and policy work across Europe and coordinate Fair Trials’ EU projects. The successful candidates will play a crucial role in the work of Fair Trials in Europe and in improving protection for the fundamental right to a fair trial.

The role of Legal Officer provides an opportunity for outstanding candidates with exceptional legal skills who are looking to gain a wide range of experience in the criminal justice and human rights context. The Legal Officer will work on critical issues such as due process in the EU and Council of Europe member states, including access to counsel, procedural defence rights, cross-border cooperation, trial waiver systems, pre-trial detention, and overall access to justice for vulnerable defendants.

The selection processes

We will aim to inform short‐listed candidates in the week commencing 18th September with interviews for short‐listed candidates being held remotely on 21st & 22nd September. If necessary, a second round of interviews may be scheduled for 25th September. All interviews will be held online. The recruitment process will only involve an interview.
