Scope of the position
The litigation manager is based in ASF’s regional office for Eastern Africa and reports to the Regional Director. He/she supports ASF’s legal assistance activities throughout the region. In this effort, he/she works in horizontal relations with ASF’s project staff in Eastern Africa and legal advisors in Brussels, proposes legal strategies, and gives technical and legal support to the ASF East Africa country teams with regards to legal aid and litigation strategies on various legal issues.
Key responsibilities and tasks
(1) Strategic litigation: identify, develop and coordinate strategic litigation cases across the region (before national, regional and international courts); conduct and coordinate legal research in support to the different cases supported by ASF;
(2) Legal & technical support (20% full time equivalent): provide technical support to country-level teams and civil society organizations, develop and produce high-level legal analysis to inform ASF’s interventions across the region, give guidance to project staff and civil society organizations on litigation strategies at country and regional level;
(3) Learning: develop, consolidate and disseminate legal knowledge across programs and projects, provide input in the formulation of strategies and programs, develop a capacity enhancement plan for ASF’s staff on legal assistance and strategic litigation;
(4) Project follow-up: lead the implementation of ASF’s regional project “promoting strategic litigation in Eastern Africa” and ASF’s country project “access to remedies in Tanzania”: planning, partners’ coordination, activity implementation and reporting
(5) Networking: Develop and maintain a network of local, regional and international practitioners in the various fields of Law of interest to ASF in the region; monitor and keep abreast with academic and legal practice development in the fields of interest to ASF across the region;

Profile
- Master’s (or higher degree) in Law;
- At least 3 years of professional experience in legal practice or non-profit work;
- Proven experience in project management;
- Proven experience in legal practice;
- Proven experience in conducting strategic litigation on human rights and rule of law issues;
- Good knowledge of the East African country contexts;
- Good knowledge of regional institutions pertaining to human rights and the Rule of Law;
- Languages: Full fluency in spoken and written English is required. Proficiency in spoken and written French is required ;

- A fixed term contract of 12 months (possibility of renewal)
