The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Manager to focus on fundraising and outreach events and initiatives in Germany. This full-time position will be based in our Berlin office and will report to the Senior Director in the Development and Outreach Department.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Work with the Berlin Development Senior Director and the Development team to identify, vet, cultivate, service, solicit and manage individual donors and prospects, including Germany Committee members, foundations and corporations;

2. Work with the Berlin Development Senior Director and the Development Team to identify, vet, implement and manage new funding sources;

3. Manage, coordinate and help produce small and flagship fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Germany, including virtual events, researcher or programmatic briefings, and other cultivation events;

4. Liaise with the Germany Committee leadership and the Germany Committee: schedule meetings (in person or virtual), create agendas, prepare background materials, lead meetings, oversee events, and conduct follow-up to meetings;

5. Assist the Berlin Development Senior Director with developing fundraising strategies;

6. Assist with event production (in person or virtual) for individuals, foundations, and corporations;

7. Coordinate select initiatives and help manage Germany based supporters;

8. Manage communications with and create content for the Germany Committee, and the wider Germany donor community including circulating event invitations, programmatic updates, and other relevant outreach;

9. Provide support services for the Berlin office including gift tracking and using HRW’s Salesforce database;

10. Work in partnership with the full Germany team, including other Development and Outreach staff, the Germany Director for Advocacy, Program Staff, and Operations, to advance all initiatives and projects;

11. Oversee the recruitment and training of interns and coordinate their work;

12. Promote an inclusive and positive work environment including soliciting diverse points of views, encouraging staff to participate in DE&I efforts, and proactively addressing bias, discrimination, microaggressions, etc.; and

13. Performing other responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (e.g. “Ausbildung”) is required.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience, preferably in fundraising and/or event management is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Experience coordinating in person and virtual events, preferably large-scale events, is required.

2. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.

3. Excellent oral and written communications skills in German and English are required.

4. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW, our volunteer groups and committees as well as with local and external partners are required.

5. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work under pressure are required.

6. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is essential.

7. Strong technology skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, social media channels and online conference platforms (Zoom and Microsoft Teams) are highly desirable.

8. An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.
