ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT

Farm Radio International is a Canadian organisation working to harness the power of radio to meet the needs of small-scale farmers. We work with more than 1,400 radio partners located in more than 38 African countries to fight poverty and food insecurity. With the benefit of Farm Radio resources and training, our broadcasting partners deliver practical, relevant, and timely information to tens of millions of women, men and youth farmers and facilitate dialogues and knowledge exchange. We also work with a range of partners to implement radio projects that address specific development challenges and community needs.

BACKGROUND

Farm Radio International is a non-profit communication-for-development organization dedicated to serving African rural communities through the innovative use of radio and mobile phones. Together with our broadcasting and project partners, we reach tens of millions of small-scale farmers with life-changing information and enable them to have a stronger voice in their own development. Through our efforts, rural radio programs enable women, men and gender diverse people to: share and access information; gain and exchange practical knowledge on agriculture, food and nutrition security, health, education, climate change adaptation; contribute to community and societal transformation; and have their voices heard.

Farm Radio International has established Green Leaf Platforms with support from IKEA Foundation, in Uganda. Green Leaf Platforms in Uganda have a strong focus on circular regenerative farming.

Farm Radio’s Green Leaf knowledge sharing platforms are a cost-effective solution to the challenge of providing and sustaining quality agricultural extension at scale in sub-Saharan Africa. Centred on widely accessible interactive radio programming and driven by local agriculture extension, Green Leaf platforms facilitate knowledge sharing, knowledge building and the uptake of good agricultural practices.

JOB OVERVIEW

We are actively seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Marketing & Revenue Generation Specialist to lead our efforts in securing ongoing funding for the Green Leaf Platforms in Uganda. The specialist will be responsible for marketing the Green Leaf radio programs to potential sponsors, securing long-term financial partnerships, and ensuring the programme’s sustainability beyond the lifecycle of donor funding. We are anticipating funding of a second phase of the Platform project in Uganda by IKEA Foundation and currently looking for exceptional talents willing to work with us (should Farm Radio be awarded this grant).

This position is contingent upon award and funding

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  1. Revenue Generation and Partnership Development
    1. Develop and implement a strategic marketing plan to secure funding from various sources, including public and private sector organizations, government agencies, and non-profit’s, for different elements and segments of the Green Leaf program, e.g. Have Your Say, Digging Deep and the proposed radio drama.
    2. Identify, research, and cultivate relationships with potential sponsors, including corporations, foundations, and national/international development organizations.
    3. Create compelling sponsorship packages and proposals that align with potential sponsors’ interests, highlighting the impact and reach of the radio program.
    4. Negotiate and secure funding agreements that ensure long-term sustainability of the radio programs and overall program development (PD) in the country office.
  2. Marketing and Communications
    1. Design and execute a marketing strategy to promote the radio program as a valuable communication channel for development, particularly in underserved communities.
    2. Work closely with the Farm Radio Communications team to develop promotional materials, including presentations, brochures, and digital content tailored for different sponsors.
    3. Manage and grow relationships with media partners, influencers, and stakeholders to increase visibility and attract potential funders.
  3. Stewardship and Reporting to Funders and Sponsors
    1. Work with Farm Radio’s MERL, Digital Innovation and Comms Teams on evidence strategies, data gathering and effective reporting for sponsors and funders.
    2. Ensure timely communication and reporting to sponsors and partners on the outcomes and impact of their contributions.
    3. Develop sponsorship engagement plans that maintain strong, ongoing relationships and encourage renewals.
    4. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of revenue generation strategies, adjusting as needed to meet financial goals.
  4. Program Sustainability and Innovation
    1. Lead efforts to diversify funding sources, including exploring innovative financing models (e.g., social enterprise, subscription, loyalty programs, corporate social responsibility initiatives, franchising etc.).
    2. Collaborate with internal teams to ensure the program’s offerings continue to evolve and align with funders’ interests and emerging development challenges.
    3. Develop strategies to extend the programme’s lifespan and expand its reach through partnerships and program development (PD) initiatives with local and international stakeholders.
  5. Capacity Development
    1. Work with Farm Radio to develop materials, processes and events that support Green Leaf radios in marketing their programs
    2. Build the capacities of Green Leaf radio station sales teams and district hubs in marketing.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Development, Communications, or a related field. A Master’s degree is an asset.

  • At least 5 years of experience in marketing, fundraising, business development, or revenue generation, preferably within the agriculture, development or media sectors.
  • Proven track record of securing funding or sponsorships from public, private, and non-profit sectors.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with social impact measurements, corporate social responsibility (CSR) trends, and non-profit financing.
  • Experience working with communication for development (C4D) initiatives, particularly radio or media-based projects, is highly desirable.
  • Strong networking skills with the ability to establish relationships with key stakeholders, sponsors, and funders.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills, including in international and intercultural contexts
