Media and Communications Manager

The Goal of the KUAT Project is to reduce the lives lost, people injured, property damaged, and overall social and economic disruption from natural disasters in Greater Jakarta, by increasing the DRR and resilience awareness and preparedness of households (HH) and communities in high-risk urban and peri-urban villages, while boosting the capacity and coordinated engagement of public and private sector actors as key partners in DRR and resilience in Indonesia.

The project has three core objectives:

– Improve community risk awareness and DRR capacity in Greater Jakarta.

– Reduce disaster risks at settlement and household-level.

– Expand Community access to financial services for improved preparedness and response to shocks and stresses

The Media and Communications Manager will lead the KUAT consortium’s communication and outreach program, supporting and guiding Miyamoto, CRS, and Wahana Visi engagement with media and social media to ensure maximum reach of key project messages and the measurement of change in multiple target groups.

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Project Director, the incumbent will be responsible for implementation of KUAT’s media relations, social media platforms, high level editorial content (social media specific content, articles, features, news stories, blogs) and Social Behavioural Change Communication campaigns. Providing Communications hub provision to KUAT Partners and relevant outreach activities in coordination with other partners.

Also, responsible for development and implementation of media engagement to support programmatic, policy and campaign priorities, organisational activities, globally and regionally. The Media & Communications Manager’s work will play a central role in building awareness of and support for KUAT’s. In addition, the individual will develop content for external communications (position statements, editorials, blogs). High level (English) editorial/writing and social media skills are essential.

Core skills;

Minimum 8-10 years communications experience /digital media experience is highly preferred

Excellent understating of traditional and social media platforms, online campaigns, website management, and related media areas

Fluency in English is essential, knowledge of local language is an advantage

Excellent writing skills/content writing (blogs, press release, social media posts) experience preferred

understanding / background in behavioral change comms and /disaster/community engagement is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations

– Lead implementation of KUAT comms strategy (traditional and Digital) to achieve maximum measurable impact on KUAT’s profile, specifically on programmatic, policy and campaigns

– Coordinate with other partners Comms teams and provide guidance on content development and dissemination activities.

– Build and maintain relations with traditional and specialized media (journalists, broadcasters and commentators, influencers) to increase KUAT’s media profile in Indonesia; develop a quarterly media outreach plan and ensure alignment in messaging with other consortium partners (comms leads)

– Draft media announcements, responses to media queries, press releases

– Support preparation of background notes, speeches and talking points for public appearances of SLT of KUAT

– Pitch stories to journalists and organize press briefings, as directed

– Maintain up to date media and contacts’ lists

– Actively create media visibility opportunities (radio, TV and print media interviews, op-eds) for KUAT’s leadership team

– Actively support project Director in media relations development, crisis communications including internal media capacity building

Social and Digital Media

– Implement Social Media Strategy as a key component of KUAT’s overall Communications Strategy; Manage content for KUAT’s social media platforms

– Develop targeted social media campaigns for KUAT (reports, policy briefs), events, and milestone days;

– Manage social media community and demonstrate an upward growth in KUAT’s audience on Twitter, Linked In and other relevant existing and emerging platforms.

– Keep up to date with new trends, developments and opportunities in the digital space and recommend how best to incorporate these for KUAT.

– Build relationships with social media editors at leading news and media organizations, help secure external placement of KUAT content and enhance coverage

– Train colleagues on how to optimize social media use, and manage access to KUAT’s social media accounts

– Ensure KUAT’s corporate website are up to date

– Flexibility and adaptability to perform other duties as and when requested by the Project Director

Behavior Change Communications Campaigning

– Participate in the dialogue with the technical teams on the key approaches to reduce disaster risk, identify messages.

– Integrate messages into media and social media dialogues.

Impact monitoring, evaluation, and learning

– Promote search engine optimization and provide monitoring and analysis to streamline performance for better outcomes.

– Work with MEAL and technical advisors to establish processes for quantification of program reach in media, social media and SBCC processes.

– Develop two-way communication with targeted beneficiaries to support measurement of retention of program messages, risk information and attitude/practices within specific target groups of the KUAT program.
