CONTEXT
Oxfam-Québec is implementing the Voluntary Cooperation Program (VPC) entitled “Equality in Action” working in close collaboration with Oxfam teams in the countries of intervention. This program will take place over a period of seven years (2020-2027) in about ten countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
The VCP aims to increase the performance of local partner organizations in developing countries in implementing inclusive, innovative, and sustainable development initiatives that will advance gender equality. Oxfam’s role is to support civil society organizations (CSOs) working with the most vulnerable and marginalized people to claim and exercise their rights. The knowledge, capacity and expertise of the qualified volunteers will be leveraged through short and long-term assignments with local partner organizations.
The VCP will be articulated within Oxfam’s Country Strategy while ensuring compliance with Oxfam-Québec’s contractual agreements with its donors.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
The Media and Communication Advisor will work with Oxfam in MENA’s Regional Platform colleagues and regional partners to amplify the impact of advocacy, communications, media, and policy work undertaken as part of RP’s regional initiatives on some of the following priority areas: gender justice, sexual and reproductive health rights, socio-economic inequalities, migration and displacement and humanitarian work. The role will involve but is not limited to the following:
- Capacity building of key partners on communications and media work, especially best practice storytelling.
- Copyrighting including: features, social media posts, talking points, scripts, and media releases.
- Developing creative briefs, TOR’s and overall conceptualization for creative products for films, photo essays, animations and other visual products.
- Identifying stories for content development including pitching to media.
- Assisting in developing the social engagement and media strategies for projects and partners.
- Engaging with journalists and influencers.
- Assisting in social media monitoring and community moderation.
- Developing and designing visual content: taking and editing photos, editing videos and developing share graphics.. ect.
- Updating contacts database.
- Supporting the Media Department in internal communications including updating the internal Compass page, managing contributions, and editing the proposed monthly MENA internal newsletter, managing the MENA workplace group and other internal pages, communication tools and channels as required.
- Support the Media department in updating our regional events and content calendar with countries.
- Support MENA media campaigns and global moments and share updates and information internally.
- Be a brand ambassador and support the rollout of the new Oxfam brand identity.
- Sharing and embodying Oxfam’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for any behaviour that violates the code of conduct, including sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse, intimidation, lack of integrity, corruption and fraud.
- Participating in development efforts in Canada during and after the mandate by contributing to the dissemination of the program, projects, partners, etc. through testimonials, life stories, photos, quotes, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
· Have Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent residence.
· Collegial certificate or Bachelor’s degree in media, strategic communications, journalism or related field.
· 3-5 years of relevant experience as a journalist or in a press office.
· Experience of working with global media, creative storytelling, and good knowledge in using social media.
· Ability to produce high-quality communications products to tight deadlines.
· Ability to develop creative briefs and customise stories and products for international audiences using a range of communications tools and channel.
· Sound editorial judgement and ability to generate stories to further Oxfam’s organisation objectives.
· Ability to conceptualise, design and deliver media, story-gathering and digital communication strategies.
· Strong design and video editing skills
· Innovative and creative approach to problem solving.
· Fluent written and spoken English. Arabic and French an asset
· Mastery of the Office suite.
· Experience working in MENA region (an asset). Knowledge of MENA region’s countries’ culture and contexts (desirable).
· Experience in international development (an asset).
· Adherence to the mission and values of Oxfam, including the promotion of equality between women and men.
