About Mercy Corps**
Mercy Corps is powered by the belief that a better world is possible. To do this, we know our teams do their best work when they are diverse and every team member feels that they belong. We welcome diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and skills so that we can be stronger and have long term impact.
Summary
Mercy Corps Ventures (MCV) is the impact investing and innovative finance division of the global development agency, Mercy Corps. MCV provides high-impact startups with investment capital, value-added support and strategic partnerships opportunities so they can scale solutions for underserved populations in fragile, frontier markets.
MCV was founded in 2015 by former operators and emerging markets investment professionals. We have closed over 28 investments to date across South East Asia, Sub Saharan Africa and Latin America, including Sokowatch, Pula, Valiu, Teliman, Cloud to Street, Turaco and Ejara. Exits include Liftit and Vasham, and we have recorded >90% follow-on success rate.
MCV focuses on tech-enabled solutions and business model innovations that drive two outcomes: strengthening financial resilience and climate resilience of people and communities. Our approach includes Investments, Venture Studio and Insights.
- Investments: We invest early-stage in high-impact, highly scalable startups. We’re thesis-driven investors, focused on tech-enabled solutions that build climate resilience and financial resilience, so that people living in frontier markets can withstand disruption, plan for the future, and thrive. We are acutely focused on driving more capital to local, female founders and diverse teams in markets that are typically overlooked by other funds (i.e. Francophone Africa).
- Venture Studio: It’s about more than just providing capital; it’s about scaling venture solutions by providing value-added support, piloting new ideas, and providing partnership opportunities to startups in our portfolio and pipeline. For early-stage companies, we focus on business fundamentals, impact measurement and management, and product-market fit. For later-stage companies, it’s all about growth, expansion and deepening impact.
- Insights: We recognize the importance of a strong ecosystem, so we dedicate resources toward identifying learnings and generating insights for the benefit of all. Sharing successes and failures helps us strengthen our approach and supports other actors and later-stage investors to make smarter decisions and more secure investments.
We’re building out a large toolbox because that’s what’s needed to address complex problems and create sustainable, scalable impact. We are developing a vibrant portfolio of innovative companies and partnerships that have proven, high-impact solutions. For more information, check out our 2020 Annual Impact Report.
