We are seeking experienced and compassionate mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) volunteers to join our partner organisation in providing essential mental health services to adults in a humanitarian context. The primary focus of this role is to strengthen the mental resilience and capacity of individuals by providing clinical (one-to-one) treatment, facilitating community collaboration, and ensuring that each person’s identity, skills, and knowledge are respected. Volunteers will collaborate with the camp community, with local interpreters playing a crucial role in facilitating communication during activities. This position requires professionals who are adept at managing high-stress situations, including working with clients facing suicidal ideation, dissociative episodes, seizures, and psychosis. Volunteers should have strong clinical skills, a deep understanding of psychopathology, and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural and dynamic environment. A volunteer can, upon request, receive a contribution of € 210 per month, provided they have volunteered with the organisation for at least three consecutive months.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one mental health treatment to individuals facing various psychological challenges, ensuring a compassionate, human-centred approach;
  • Work closely with the camp community, ensuring their active participation in the mental health process, with interpreters assisting in bridging language gaps and fostering understanding;
  • Offer psychosocial support that fosters empowerment, strength, and resilience in clients, focusing on their existing capacities and knowledge;
  • Monitor and document client progress, maintaining accurate records of sessions and reporting any significant developments to the appropriate team members;
  • Provide mental health education to community members, raising awareness of mental health issues and reducing stigma;
  • Collaborate with the broader team to ensure integrated support for individuals, sharing insights and strategies for improving the impact of our work.

Qualifications & skills:

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in clinical mental health care (post-graduation). Experience in one-to-one treatment (e.g. counselling, psychotherapy) is essential;
  • Solid knowledge of psychopathology and experience managing complex mental health conditions;
  • English language proficiency is required. Additional language proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, Tigrinya, Somali, Amharic, Kurdish, Pashto, or Lingala are highly preferred;
  • Eligible to live and work in an EU country;
  • EU drivers licence B;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment; Strong collaboration skills;
  • Ability to think critically and respond quickly to crises, making decisions with the best interests of clients in mind.
