About the organization

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data organization (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping institution. The ACLED team collects conflict information, conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED’s work is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

The role

ACLED is recruiting a full-time Middle East Analyst to join our Analysis team. The employee will report to the Middle East Senior Analyst. Please note that this is a contractor position.

Responsibilities and tasks

The Middle East Analyst will be responsible for the following tasks:

Research

  • Under the direction of the Middle East Senior Analyst, contribute to ACLED analysis by authoring original outputs focusing on the Middle East region
  • Make region-specific contributions to thematic or global outputs
  • Work in close partnership with the Global Data Collection team, the External Affairs team, and other members of the Analysis team to support comprehensive coverage of the Middle East region
  • Support the Middle East Senior Analyst with other analysis and data-related tasks as required

Data management

  • Contribute to improving regional coverage of ACLED data, identifying new sources or partners in the Middle East region
  • Provide background information on regional actors and armed groups, as required by the Global Data Collection and Methodology teams
  • Work with the Global Data Collection and Methodology teams to address methodological issues and draft methodology documents

Outreach

  • Provide expert commentary and analysis for outputs produced by the External Affairs team
  • Provide expert advice to donors and stakeholders in collaboration with the Grants & Development team upon request
  • Engage with media organizations and provide commentary upon request

Other

  • Take part in and contribute to ACLED internal meetings
  • Other administrative and communications tasks as required

Skills and competencies

ACLED is seeking applicants who have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience in conflict analysis
  • Extensive knowledge of politics and society in Iraq and Syria
  • At least two (2) years of work experience in government, academia, international organizations, NGOs, or journalism
  • Master’s degree in Political Science/Social Sciences/Geography/Sociology focused on conflict studies or equivalent required
  • Fluency in English and Arabic
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the ACLED dataset
  • Strong critical thinking and data analysis skills
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • A high level of attention to detail and the ability to receive and incorporate feedback
  • Experience working in a team, to tight deadlines, and with limited supervision
  • Access to a computer, a reliable internet connection, email address, and the Microsoft Office Suite
