Midwife (Gaza) At Save the Children

The Opportunity – Midwife (National – consultancy)

Post location: Gaza Field Office – Deir al Balah – Subject to change depending on SC priorities

Contract Duration and Level of Effort: 3 months to be renewed

ROLE PURPOSE:

The responsibility of the midwife is centered around delivering quality Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) through the provision of quality care, advice and support. This will include the provision of antenatal care, conduct emergencies deliveries, essential new-born care, and post-natal care, in addition to the provision of family planning. The midwife works collaboratively with primary health care doctor and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective care for mothers and their families in addition to referrals to nutrition services.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Health Officer

Staff reporting to this post: None.

Role Dimensions: oPt CO is a high complexity country, multi-member interest, with an annual budget of around $40+m, and 100+ staff. Currently the program is experiencing a growth in funding and complexity due to the war in Gaza.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Antenatal Care:

  • Provide high quality antenatal by conducting initial and ongoing antenatal assessments.
  • Monitor the health and development of the fetus
  • Provide education on pregnancy, childbirth, and nutrition
  • Identify and manage obstetric complications in consultation with medical doctor
  • Provide iron/folic acid supplementations
  • Conduct nutrition screening for pregnant women
  • Provision of counselling and support for women birth preparedness and complication readiness

Intrapartum Care (Emergency Deliveries)

  • Provide support and care in case of emergency delivery at PHC.
  • Monitor the progress of labor and manage any complications in consultation with medical doctor and refer as needed.
  • Follow infection prevention procedures and ensure the health and safety of both mother and baby during emergency childbirth.
  • Ensure and maintain privacy and patient confidentiality

Postnatal Care:

  • Conduct postnatal assessments for mothers and newborns.
  • Provide breastfeeding support and education.
  • Monitor and support the physical and emotional recovery of the mother.
  • Conduct nutrition screening for pregnant women
  • Identify and manage postnatal complications in consultation with medical doctor
  • Educate women to recognize obstetric dangers signs and newborn danger signs and seek health care
  • Provision of counselling, support and advice for breastfeeding women and their family
  • Provide Post abortion care as per MoH/WHO recommendations and linkages to family planning services in consultation with medical doctor.

Family Planning:

  • Provide quality counselling on family planning to women and girls.
  • Offer short-term family planning services.

IYCF-E:

Refer the mother and baby to the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF)/ nutrition team/breastfeeding counsellor to promote optimal IYCF practices.

General activities:

  • Ensuring all patient data and documentation is accurately and timely completed as per Save the Children Health Information System.
  • Use of approved SCI/MoH and tools (clinical registers, reports, patient daily records, clinical logbooks etc)
  • Consult with medical doctor in case of identification sexual gender-based case, management and safe referral
  • Participate in internal regular meetings ensuring SRH issues are addressed.
  • Attend learning and development opportunities (e.g. training).
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by line manager.
  • Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Midwife, qualified from the recognized institution and licenced to practice midwifery in Gaza

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in maternal and child health
  • Working knowledge of MISP
  • Knowledge of public health, STDs/HIV, family planning, post abortion care and community midwifery
  • Good understanding of broad health issues within community
  • Strong understanding of community, culture and customs
  • Good understanding of local humanitarian context
  • Able to effectively engage with the local community, including children
  • Able to keep accurate records
  • Able to provide supervision and training
  • Able to establish good working relationships and positively contribute to a team
  • Able to priorities and plan, co-ordinate and monitor own and work of others
  • Flexible, positive, and proactive approach to work
  • Able to work in a stressful and changing environment with limited resources
  • Concern for the wellbeing of children and interest in Child Rights
  • Strong communication skills including clear style of giving instructions
  • Strong interpersonal and counselling skills

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in role with Ministry of Health (MoH) or Non-Governmental organization (NGO)
  • Speak and understand local languages
  • Command on MS Office
